A while ago there was a thread about the company who fired employees who smoked. We wondered about the next step - employees who are overweight. Well, it seems that day is here - at least at this Casino!

Weighty Issue: Casino Will Fire Workers Who Gain Weight
Waitresses, Bartenders Can't Gain More Than 7 Percent Of Body Weight

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Borgata Babes had better watch their weight.

The Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa has warned its tail waitresses they could be out of a job if they gain too much weight. The bustier-wearing Borgata Babes are barred from gaining more than 7 percent of their body weight.

The weight rules also apply to male and female bartenders. Announced to employees last week, the policy says if anyone get a little too chubby, they'll be given an unpaid suspension of up to 90 days to go on a diet. Officials of the Atlantic City casino say if the employee can't shed the excess pounds, he or she will be canned.

An exception will be made for those who are pregnant or have a medical condition.

The policy is infuriating women's rights advocates, the tail servers' union and others who call the policy discriminatory. The tail servers' union is filing a grievance over the weighty issue.

The casino, whose edgy marketing themes and sexy accents have helped bowl over the compe ion since its opening in July 2003, contends there is nothing wrong with setting weight limits. It has 210 costumed beverage servers, which include 160 Borgata Babes and 50 other male and female bartenders.

That doesn't mean the business should be exempt from criticism.

I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with their policy - after all, employees are told the policy at the time of hiring. I thought the article was interesting and just wanted to bring it to everyone's attention.

?? Hooters has been discriminating based on looks and build for the better part of a decade. This is not a new concept.

Well, before I "weigh" in on this topic, will someone please answer this question - Do large breasts (in and of themselves) contribute to higher bodyfat percentages?

Breasts ARE composed mostly of fatty tissue, but they're not measured as part of body-fat percentage tests. So, yes and no.

They aren't measured with the calipers (wouldn't the personal trainers love that? ), but they are in the electro-magnetic body fat testers...and the ones they do when they dunk you in water.
