What a spectacular feat of engineering.
That Freedom Tower design in the first image has been scrapped though. Its designer didn't begin to consider whether it was even possible to engineer basically a 40-story greenhouse at the top (it isn't).

I wonder how long before it collapses under the weight of its hubris
Really? so what's the new design?
That is awesome.
Is it going to be as tall as the original design? or are they going for style rather than height?
The scary part is that these structures are being built with third world national craftsmen. The Arabs pay them about 300 to 400 USD per month and make them sleep in two man rooms (for westerners) but they stick about 10 men in this two man room.
With this small salary (60 hour work week) they must support families back home and pay for their own food ehile in country. The seventh day is their religious holiday(friday) and Muslins can not work on this day. The only exceptions are if you work shift work in the refineries
YOu should see the sea islands they have constructed just off their beaches , National Geographic had a special last month and I could not beleive how much this country has changed in the last five years since I retired from the middle east
Is This Country Great or What
It's the next Tower of Babel.
That's an impressive piece of architecture.
I do think Dubai is biting more than it can chew, though. I was just there (in transit to India) a couple of weeks ago and their airport is a mess, their level of service is not the best (though I only interacted with airport staff, I think it's representative of what's to expect outside of it) and they really need to get a hold of their pollution problems before it gets any worse.
Not bad. But my gun is bigger! Huh?
Yeah, this is getting built in Dubai:
The Nakheel Harbour Tower. Height: 4,500 feet.

There's always been a underlying phallic element to the design of all these towers, but it looks like the Chicago Spire is actually modeled after a sex toy.
hubris only weighs one pound for every two pounds of actual hubris...
whats hubris?
as opposed to the "vaginal" design such as in the alamo with its "clitoral hump" just above the front door?
one time i rubbed the hump and the alamo squirted...
You know someone is going to try to fly a small plane through the hole in the Shanghai World Financial Centre.
