    Jeff McDonald: More airline-inspired thinking

Spurs-related ruminations from 35,000 feet above Lake Michigan, while wondering how come the gift shop at the Milwaukee aiport is still overstocked with New York Jets gear ...

    * Bucks 82, Spurs 78. That one hurts. The Spurs did what they wanted -- they played hard, they defended -- they just didn't win. Without Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, there are going to be nights like this. Problem is, there will also be many nights when they won't have a shot to win the game in the fourth quarter. In order to stay afloat for the next four weeks, they need to win the games they can win.

    * Several of you eternal optimists have e-mailed wondering if the 2009 first-round pick the Spurs dealt the Seattle/OKC SuperSonics/Thunder in the Kurt Thomas deal last season is lottery protected. It is. So, if the Spurs fail to make the playoffs this season, they get to keep the pick, and Sam Presti and Co. get the Spurs' 2010 selection. There's a silver lining for ya.

    * The Spurs' lineup shakeup at shooting guard seems to be working out for one player. Over the past two games, Michael Finley has averaged 16.5 points off the bench and made 14 of 21 field goals -- quite a comeback from his scoreless, 0-8 clank-fest against Miami. Roger Mason, the player who replaced Finley in the lineup, is averaging eight points and is 4 for his last 20.

    * It doesn't take a genius to realize that Matt Bonner has fallen out of favor. Again. Bonner took a DNP last night, after playing a total of 42 seconds in the two games prior. Anthony Tolliver has clearly passed him on the depth chart.

It would be good if Bonner could reinvent himself as the loveable stiff at the end of the bench, but sadly that's not going to happen for him with the expectations having been raised, or is it razed?

I would think Matt gets some minutes this friday. Him and farmer for that matter. 3 games in 4 days makes you play your minutes differently no matter how good or bad your playing.
