LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A Georgia woman has sued Hewlett-Packard Co. (NYSE:HPQ - news), claiming the ink cartridges for their printers are secretly programmed to expire on a certain date, in some cases rendering them useless before they are even installed in a printer.

The suit filed in Santa Clara Superior Court in northern California last Thursday seeks to represent anyone in the United States who purchased an HP inkjet printer since Feb. 2001. HP is the world's No. 1 computer printer maker.

HP spokesmen were not immediately available to comment.

HP ink cartridges use a chip technology to sense when they are low on ink and advise the user to make a change. But, the suit claims, those chips also shut down the cartridges at a predetermined date regardless of whether they are empty.

"The smart chip is dually engineered to prematurely register ink depletion and to render a cartridge unusable through the use of a built-in expiration date that is not revealed to the consumer," the suit said.

The suit, which seeks class-action status, asks for res ution, damages and other compensation.

Especially considering that buying both black & color cartridges together can cost more than some printers....that's very disturbing.

I'm just not a get screwed and not get paid kind a guy. I also open my mail and sinse it was easy to do, I followed through.

A friend of mine at work bought a Hyundai Elantra a few years back. He got $50 from a lawsuit against them for overstating the horsepower on their cars. It was a simple website signup, so why not do it?

Ink prices are a damn joke. I hope HP gets ed royally on this. I used to work at Best Buy, we priced it out one time. A gallon of black ink costs $3,850. Makes that $2 for gas a while back seem like a bargain...

How did you get $500 from Firestone? What was that all about?
The Firestone Tire Recall. The truck I had at the time originally came with one of the types of recalled tires. Even though I had gone through many sets of different tires on that truck, the pair I had on it at the time was also a recalled tire. I had about 44,000 miles on them but I still qualified so they gave me $125 per tire....which actually was $625 dollars, come to think of it! I went out and bought a set of Goodyear Wrangler ATs for around $800, minus the $625, meant I got them for $175 or so. The funny thing was that I never even had problems with any of the recalled tires.

The recall was for certain brand names of Firestone tires, with certain sizes, that had been placed on vehicles during a specific period of time.
