Republican Wins Runoff for Senator in Georgia

ATLANTA — Saxby Chambliss, a first-term Republican senator, was re-elected by Georgia voters on Tuesday in a substantial victory, ending Democratic hopes for a 60-vote majority in the Senate that would make it difficult for Republicans to filibuster the Obama administration's legislative agenda.
With 96 percent of the state's precincts reporting in the runoff election, Mr. Chambliss had 57.5 percent of the vote, and his Democratic challenger, Jim Martin, 42.5 percent. The margin was far greater than the three percentage points that separated the two men in the Nov. 4 election, when neither won the required 50 percent. Many of the Democrats who turned out last month in enthusiastic support of Barack Obama apparently did not show up at the polls on Tuesday.
...
A little more than two million people voted in the runoff, compared with 3.7 million on Nov. 4.
...
Many voters interviewed Tuesday said the balance of power in the Senate had been an important factor in their choice of a candidate.

No shock. Chambliss would have won on election day if GA didn't have the requirement to exceed 50% for the winner. Hopefully, a win in a VERY red state will send the GOP galloping of further to the right in a futile search for votes.
This should keep Joe Lieber in line, since his vote is now not critical.
Filibuster proof my a$$!
(New Republican Battle Cry)
he won by 14 points -- you know since the conservative movement is dead... all those straight ticket votes were no shows. No Savior Obama to bring them to the polls.
Problem is, there are still too many republicans that will vote with the democrats.
Damn RINOs.
At least senator Smith will be gone.
The only reasons the race was close in the first place....
1) There was a third-party Libertarian on the original ballot, which took votes away from the Republican nominee.
2) Saxby voted FOR the bailout when it was incredibly unpopular.
Martin never stood a chance.
Oh, the drama.
It's not dead, just asleep. The GOP needs to take another tack other than the Southern Strategy/anti-immigration foolishness that got their asses handed to them. I don't think it involves going further right, but wouldn't mind if they did.
