Jeff McDonald: Doubling down on the random thoughts

NEW ORLEANS -- Random thoughts, while nervously fingering a wad of cash and trying to remember the rules for blackjack (always split aces and eights, always double-down on 11, never challenge the dealer to a fist-fight, etc):

    * In this morning's dead tree edition, we wrote a piece about Tim Duncan's longevity. Well, odds are good he's going to hit another milestone tomorrow night at New Orleans. With five rebounds, Duncan is set to join the 10,000-rebound club. Earlier this season, Duncan scored his 18,000th point and blocked his 2,000th shot. He should become one of only six players in NBA history to have accomplished each of those three feats.

    * Michael Finley is set to play in his 1,000th career game, should he make an appearance against the Hornets. This is an actual, according-to-the-NBA milestone, not one made up for the purposes of selling newspaper (like Duncan's last week). Duncan has played in 1,000 games, including playoffs -- which the league does not count. Finley will have played in 1,000, excluding playoffs.

    * This upcoming road trip to face New Orleans and Orlando back to back should prove to be a good litmus test for the Spurs. They are 15-8, after starting 1-4, but have defeated just five teams with winning records.

    * Of course, if Dwight Howard sits out for the Magic, this road trip suddenly becomes a bit more manageable.

    * It will be interesting to see what rookie point guard George Hill does with whatever minutes he's given tomorrow night. His first big NBA moment came guarding Chris Paul during the preseason. He aquitted himself well there. However, this is the regular season, which is a whole different animal.

    * We in the media are still not on speaking terms with Super Hugo, whose fiery antics cost us 19 minutes of deadline time during the playoffs last season.

I think there are 6 players in the 18K-10K-2K club. Duncan would become the 7th.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Hakeem Olajuwon, Shaquille O'Neal, Patrick Ewing, Robert Parish and Robinson.

Edit: I found where I got the list, NBA.com. I assume it is right.

Its a pity they didn't start counting blocks in the ealy days of the league. I'd be very interested to know the numbers for Bill Russell and the Stilt.

With Wilt's gaudy stats it would probably be somewhere around 6,000.

I wonder what his block totals would be if someone had kept track? You don't rack up his kind of numbers without boxing out a buddy for a ho.
