Rivers was robbed at the expense of an undeserving Brett Favre

    By MJD

I hate writing this kind of post, because there's really no way to not sound like a whiny homer. But that's all right with me. I'll be a homer today. I've got reason to whine today.

Philip Rivers was left off the Pro Bowl roster.

You may not be as upset about this as I am, and I realize that there's a certain segment of the population out there that doesn't recognize Philip Rivers as the pure-of-soul, kind-hearted ray of sunshine that he is. And that's okay.

But fair is fair. Rivers hasn't missed a game and he's got the highest quarterback rating in the league. He's the only guy with a rating over 100.

And yet, six other quarterbacks are going to Hawaii and Rivers isn't? Nonsense, I tell you.

And I'm perfectly willing to play the Pro Bowl Complaint game fairly. If you want to add someone to the roster, you have to subtract someone, too. No problem. So that Rivers could be added, I would subtract ... well, take your pick, actually. I'd take Rivers over any of the three AFC quarterbacks that got the nod.

As I may have mentioned previously, Rivers has the best quarterback rating in the league. Maybe you don't like that stat, and you'd rather judge him on something more tangibly related to the game, like touchdown production. He leads the league with 28, tied with Drew Brees, and I'd also like to add that Drew Brees threw the ball 119 more times to get his 28 TDs.

So maybe you're thinking that the touchdown production and QB rating are inflated because Rivers is some kind of dink-and-dunk quarterback who turns into Kordell Stewart if he's asked to throw the ball farther than seven yards. And you'd be incorrect. Again, Rivers is the best in the league there, averaging 8.23 yards per attempt, tied with Tony Romo.

Meanwhile, Brett Favre is on the roster, with his sub-Cassel QB rating of 86.5 and his league-leading 17 interceptions. Interceptions are still bad, right? Those still count? Favre's 6.8 yards-per-attempt also ranks 20th in the league. Yeah, that says excellence.

Of course, I realize that the decision to add Brett Favre to the AFC Pro Bowl roster was made on the day he was traded to the Jets. I'd argue less about the inclusion of Cutler or Manning, but I'd still argue. Rivers is better than any of them by almost any statistical measure. Other than yards, that is, and Rivers is still pretty comparable there, ranking fifth in the league.

Yards, really, are the crux of the issue. Not the yards themselves, necessarily, but the reason Rivers doesn't have as many as Cutler or Manning: the fact that his team wasn't as good, he didn't have the ball as much and didn't have as many opportunities. Rivers is out because his team's relative lack of success is being held against him.

And also because Brett Favre is a gunslinger, he's like a kid out there, he's a grizzly veteran, he loves playing the game and because Wrangler makes Real. Comfortable. Jeans., blah blah blah.

Rivers definitely deserved to go. But team performance generally has at least a little something to do with it, and the Chargers suck harder than any team has sucked before (in comparison to preseason expectations).

I mean, not even the Lions are as big a failure this season as the Chargers are, when you remember what everyone expected of both teams before Week 1.

charger fans are delusional to the bitter end. You think Norv Turner is gonna lead this team to two huge wins to save the season?

you forget that two of those wins were to KC, by a combined two points. and yeah you can argue that SD deserved to win bc they came back, and i credit them for it. but the chiefs gave that game away. and then lost on a last second field goal.
and the other win was when the chiefs went for two on the last play of the game for the win not the tie. again you can argue that a win is a win, but had the chiefs played it conservatively its just as likely they would have won. though, you have to factor in teh chiefs choke factor.
not saying SD didnt deserve to win for playing the game thorugh all 4 quarters but......by all rights they should be out of the playoff picture

If they had an underachieving superbowl between teams who were favorites to make the superbowl but ed it up somehow, it'd be a showdown between Dallas and San Diego.

Agreed that he deserved to go, but I could really care less about the pro-bowl and I hope he feels the same way. It's the equivalent of winning prom king, sure, you'll get laid that night but who the is going to remember you winning five years later.

When speaking of preseason expectations, I'm not sure anyone, including myself, realized how much of an impact Merriman made. I've never seen a single player change the game as much as he does, and that includes how much others on his team rely on him *cough* Cromartie *cough*.

If Tom Brady didn't get injured, Rivers could've had a perfect passer rating in every game, a 9,000 yard, 64 touchdown season and he still wouldn't have gone to the Pro Bowl because the name on the back of his jersey isn't Manning, Brady or Favre.

Maybe talking to opposing team players and fanbases made people think twice before putting his name on their Pro Bowl ballots. Just a thought.

Rivers deserved it more than Favre. Romo deserved it more than Eli Manning.

The Giants recent losing streak came at the tail end of Pro Bowl ballotting. Romo might deserve it more now but during the peak of the selection process, Eli was leading the Giants on a winning streak while Romo was injured and his team was not playing very well. Romo didn't deserve the Pro Bowl this year, just like the Cowboy's didn't deserve 13 of their players there last year.

Keep dreaming. Buffalo hasn't beaten us since 1992, and they haven't beaten us at Mile High since 1967.

Also, Jeff Garcia is expected to start to Sunday and your CB Jammer is banged up.
Tampa is still fighting for a playoffs spot and is unbeaten at home.

No. But to ducks point mono, think about it.
Rivers put up these kind of stats on a Norvron Turner coached team.

Makes it what, 50Xs as impressive?
