Is there any way we can trade up for a high draft pick?

If so, then who or what picks?

I suppose no one either knows who Hasheem Thabeet is or cares to want him.

    Oh, well. Next idea...

Did you watch Thabeet play against Greg Monroe? Monroe, a freshman (who is awesome) made Thabeet look like yesterdays news. Monroe is the real deal.

This is from the Hartford Courant July '08.

    Hasheem Thabeet: Stronger & Quicker
    By Mike Anthony

Hasheem Thabeet is looking better. I've seen him in person a few times and, while its only pickup and/or workouts, he's clearly stronger and quicker near the basket.

Jim Calhoun has heard much the same. Calhoun is a coach 365 days a year. But he can't actually coach 365 days a year. Calhoun is not allowed to organize games or be in the gym to analyze and/or critique players as they get in runs at Gampel and Guyer. He gets plenty of feedback, though.

"I've heard from everybody, players in particular and scouts, they're saying that he may dunk more now in one pickup game than he did all of last year," Calhoun said. "I'm not talking about being by yourself - I'm talking spinning moves and finishing with a dunk. He's doing that with incredible ease. That's very good for us."

The scouts Calhoun speaks of are mainly those who saw Thabeet at the Lebron James Skills Academy July 6-8 in Akron, Oh. Thabeet was on hand as a counselor, and experience that leads to great exposure among scouts and the opportunity to work out and play pick-up with some of the game's best, such as Lebron himself. Thabeet spent a few weeks home in Tanzania before heading to the camp, so Calhoun feared that his 7-3 center might be rusty for a little while, but that has not been the case. Thabeet also worked out recently in Houston.

"Hasheem just keeps getting better," Calhoun said. "At the Lebron camp, they were raving about him coming off pick and rolls, etc., some terrific moves for dunks. The pro scouts were saying they couldn't believe how much he's improved. There's just nobody in our gym who can handle him right now, and that's a good thing."

Thabeet averaged 6.2 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.8 blocks as a freshman in 2006-07. Last season, his numbers jumped to 10.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 4.5 blocks.

"He'll continue to work," Calhoun said. "I've always said he can dominate a game for stretches. I hope he's the most dominating center in the country this year. If he can add those two-handed dunks to go with the shot-blocking and all the other things, he's going to have a heck of a year for us and, conversely, we could have a heck of a year."

Thabeet will probably go somewhere in the top 5 of the lottery. He's 7'3" and rapidly improving what is already a solid game. It's going to take a lot to pry him away from another team.
