Tell them what they want to hear.
Tell them what they need to hear.
I still hate my party for not considering him seriously for the Republican nomination.
ing idiots.
BTW, where all you Democratic ' s at now that Obama's promising ever bigger deficits over the coming years? So much for that scapel, huh....
There's still a scalpel. We're all gonna get skinned to pay the bill.
Personally, I won't vote for any politician who doesn't promise to raise taxes and cut benefits. Anything else would just be stupid.
The only thing... ONLY... was that he would have pulled us out of Iraq prematurely. He is a libertarian, I am a (conservative) libertarian!
You can cut benefits without raising taxes...
Make social programs attempt to reduce the numbers on the take instead of a program that tries to find ways to be bigger. Look at all the unemployed on the government teat. Look at the illegal immigrants. Make it next to impossible to get a job if you are not a legal resident and put the people on welfare to work in those jobs "Americans wont do" and maybe they will try to better themselves... Maybe the economy will boom...
You don't get it, WC.
Bootstrapping alone won't get us out of the hole.
Funding en lement legacies is a bear all by itself, and the interest on our debt will eat us alive before too long. (Have you seen iousa, the movie?)
More taxes and fewer services is the only ticket. If we don't start paying down everything, toot suite, we're toast.
At this point, yeah. Raise the taxes once you can afford to and let's get down to business. You could just stop spending billions on stupid , but after all these trillions we are all ed anyways.
But why should we trust that this government will be any different than the others? Still wasteful spending, still failed systems.
Obama is saying some good stuff but I hope for the sake of the country he is really different. Obama might not get done what he originally wanted to do with his presidency, but if he can actually dig the country out of this cluster the RIGHT way, so that the people actually start believing the government has finally gotten their head screwed on straight, he could be one of the greatest.
You can do it without raising taxes. In fact, tax increases only help for a year or two. Then the increased taxes reduces the economy and we are back to less revenue.
The key is reducing spending. Only by reducing spending can we beat that demon.
There was a study done that had some interesting results. I didn't see it in a quick search, but it was posted here not long ago. It in essence said that no matter the tax rate, government revenue was something like 18.5% of the GDP, or GNP throughout history. I don't clearly recall the exact details. However, since increasing taxes reduces economic spending, if anything, we want to reduce taxes more.
Have you seen i.o.u.s.a., the movie?
The system is past the point where it can be saved. The United States will default on its debt and we will become poor.
This appeals strongly to my own common sense. May I ask what assures you of this, ES?
If one grants the national default position, the crucial question becomes do our creditors know it yet? If they have not yet lost confidence perhaps we can continue to ride our own sweet promises for awhile.
That's really all the USD is based on. Our sweet promise to pay. That's all it's ever been based on.
That default is even in the picture at all ought to set angry mobs afoot with torches and pointy things to harass their representatives at night.
We have about 5 years left to make our fortunes.
Look at our unfunded en lements. Where is that money coming from? Do you think the electorate is going to vote austerity for itself? Look at the history of banana republic after banana republic -- they spend themselves to death buying votes, and then they default on their debt and the economy collapses.
Look at us now -- we have a $1.2 trillion deficit just this year. It's not going to get any better in coming years as Obama desperately tries a series of Keynesian jumpstarts. Once Uncle China takes away our credit card, that is it for the United States of America.
i think none of you have a clue of whats going to happen with our monetary future.
Perhaps. But by all means do share. What do you know about it, gtownspur?
Their own recession may do this for them.
Once you get 50% of the electorate NOT paying taxes - the country is screwed because those people will NEVER vote against more en lements and they will never vote to start paying taxes. And that's just about where we are!
Exactly. By the way, many of those 50% not paying taxes will actually receive a check from the government. (*cough* welfare *cough*.)
Two wolves, one sheep . . . what's for dinner?
i'm as ignorant as all of you.
what he says is pretty scary, but probably true.

I've been saying that for years, but people just seem not to care here.
Are they all welfare cases?

The people of San Antonio just voted to tax themselves for city improvements...
