The Portland Trail Blazers have issued an unusual warning to rival NBA teams who are thinking about hiring their former player, Darius Miles: Put Miles on the court, say the Blazers, and we may sue you.

"The Portland Trail Blazers will take all necessary steps to safeguard its rights, including, without limitation, litigation,'' wrote Blazers president Larry Miller in an e-mail addressed late Thursday night to all NBA team presidents and general managers. SI.com was provided access to the memo by an NBA team executive.
The executive speculated that Miles may seek legal action of his own against the Blazers, by claiming that Portland is limiting his right to work.

Here is the full text of Miller's statement that was dispatched to rival teams Thursday:
    "Team Presidents and General Managers,
"The Portland Trail Blazers are aware that certain teams may be contemplating signing Darius Miles to a contract for the purpose of adversely impacting the Portland Trail Blazers Salary Cap and tax positions. Such conduct from a team would violate its fiduciary duty as an NBA joint venturer. In addition, persons or en ies involved in such conduct may be individually liable to the Portland Trail Blazers for tortuously interfering with the Portland Trail Blazers' contract rights and perspective economic opportunities.
"Please be aware that if a team engages in such conduct, the Portland Trail Blazers will take all necessary steps to safeguard its rights, including, without limitation, litigation.''

I feel Stern should fine the Blazers $18 million dollars (Miles contract in monetary value) and strip them off their 2009 and 2011 first round picks...

Sorry tlong...your franchise screwed up this time...

Teams should call his bluff. He has no right to stop Miles from working. The NBA should fine them the 18 million owed Miles and strip them of draft picks.

Hmm which team has the most to gain by screwing the Blazers over? This should be a V-bookie. Which NBA team will pull the trigger.

    Is this serious?

There are no links from a Lakers poster with 2 posts.

And isn't Larry Miller the owner of the Utah Jazz?

edit: Just saw it on the ESPN.NBA page so I guess it's a real story.

Denver should sign Miles to a 10 day because they also have a legit reason to now that Carmelo is out for a few weeks.

Any Western Conference contending team has a legitimate reason for knocking the Blazers down for years to come. That means Warriors, Rockets, Spurs, Jazz, Lakers, Nuggets, Mavericks and Hornets. You know what would be funny is that Mark Cuban pulls that trigger. He has the deep pockets and the balls to do it too.

I am interested in knowing what "independent" doctor said Miles is unable to play?
Boston and Memphis doctors think Miles' knee is just fine....

Portland's FO. Is Miles any good? No. Is Miles worthy of being declared medically unfit to play? No as well. Portland does not deserve an exemption, end of story.

The NBA has said they will support any team that wants to sign Miles despite Portland's threat of litigation.
