The Dunk Contest died in 1989, when MJ and Dominique declined to enter it and Kenny "Sky" Walker won it. It's been dead ever since.
I'm sick of hearing everyone talk about Dwight Howard bringing the Dunk Contest back. That dunk wasn't that great. He had to lower himself to a Carrot Top level and use props. What is so great about a 6"11 guy throwing the ball down? It was pathetic to hear the announcers ing their pants when he did it- but the truth is that it wasn't that great. Below are some dunks that are all better than that prop fest last year. Brent Barry, Harold Minor, Isaiah Ryder, and Dee Brown all had better dunks.

It wasnt a dunk..if he would have pulled the rim down, then the dunk would = all the hype it gets
it was a layup not a dunk. if he did it during a regular game, it would have been basket interference.
All I see is a bunch of people jealous of the next great big.... But yeah, that dunk was a layup/laydown.
View it in the context, after Vince the dunk contest has sucked.
DH has brought some excitement back into it. Something NBA fans have been waiting for.
Yea I thought it was wack... people who say that it was great have obviously never seen.. mj, wilkins, rider, webb, minor, carter in anyother contests. I thought it was suppose to be about skill and creativity? Sure it takes some creativity to slap a sticker on the backboard or even to put on a cape and do a layin. But jose barea could of done that .. hopefully howard doesn't try to pull that b.s. again this year
That dunk is just as overrated as Dwight Howards game
Iguodala was robbed bigger than anyone in dunk contest history. he had some fantasic and creative dunks that were overlooked because of that nate robinson bull .
I think Vince Carter brought life back to the slam dunk contest for that one year, 2000 was it? He did three different dunks no one has ever attempted much less seen before.
You're right, Vinsanity and Stevie Franchise did resurrect it briefly in 2000. But to paraphrase Sick Boy from Trainspotting, the 2000 Contest was merely a blip on an otherwise uninterrupted downward trajectory.
I will never get Kenny Smith's overraction to that dunk out of my head
Oh you think you could do that? Do you realize how difficult that is?
it was lame, he just threw it up and dunked it and..."ooooooooooooooooooohhhhhh I think I'm leaving the building"
Of couse I can do that, thats why Smith's reaction was so lame
Hilarious
VC, T-Mac, and Francis put on an incredible show that year.
The creativity is there, but just about anyone in the nba who can dunk can do that.
+1000
Iggy's dunks were the best I've seen since Carter.
VC is just in another category altogether... That guy can seriously dunk on anybody. The best dunks I've seen IN GAME were from him.
He had 3 other dunks you ing re s.
edit: GREAT dunks.
