    After showing leanings toward USC, Manti Te'o, the top defensive recruit in the country, decided to go to Notre Dame.

    This is a HUGE catch for Notre Dame and hopefully Te'o will help bolster our defense.

    First Manti Te'o called Tuesday night to ask if he indeed would have the opportunity to compete early and often for Notre Dame, which had the feel of a player dipping his toe into an icy tide, anxious but eager all at once. Then the player's father, Brian, called to discuss the fine print in scholarship papers regarding a possible Mormon mission. Then Te'o, the prized Honolulu linebacker prospect, donned a lei with hints of green and gold just after dawn Wednesday. But all the hints and omens amounted to nothing concrete until Te'o reached to his right and grabbed a Notre Dame cap on national signing day, instantly reviving good feelings about the Irish's 2009 haul. Charlie Weis, in fact, was an hour late to his news conference because he was waiting for Te'o's faxed letter of intent. It was worth it for a player recruiting analyst Tom Lemming labeled " Notre Dame's biggest defensive catch in 30 years." "Academics and the atmosphere on campus," Lemming said of the keys to landing Te'o. "Notre Dame is very similar to Punahou, a private school [Te'o attends]. I think he feels more comfortable there than at a school with a party-type atmosphere."

    wasn't happy about hearing that, but what can you do. its not like SC is hurting. hopefully he starts as a freshman and we kill them.

    That's a condition of his commitment - that he's doing a two year mission when he turns 19. His dad and Weis made sure it was in writing.
