I've been having an occasional problem lately. First off, I recently installed XP for the first time (previously used win2k). I never had the problem with win2k.

When ripping CDs into mp3s, sometimes a few tracks will end up with no audio. They play, but no sound. Other tracks from the same rip session play fine. This happens with CDex as the ripper, so I recently changed to using EAC. Not sure if it's happened with EAC yet.

Also, I just copied an original CD using Nero 6 Ultra edition. On the resulting burned CD, the first 5 tracks have no audio, but look like they are playing normally, the other tracks sound fine.

    Weird... any ideas?

I'd bet you need to update your audio driver. If you have the most recent driver it may be a compatibility issue between your hardware and xp; then again this doesn't explain some tracks working. Can you successfully rip using Windows Media Player?

Maybe there's a driver for your actual CD-RW drive?

dbpowerrip or some like that... get it! i don't have a windows machine any longer so i can't really help ya with software but i used to use dbpoweramp(rip?) all the time and it never failed at ripping tracks... just make sure to grab the mp3 codec too.

as for burning i suppose nero is fine... crazy thing is with all my windows machines burning was one thing that was so inconsistent. would burn fine and then nothing but coasters, i'd with the drives or software and we're back in business and then would go haywired again. this happened throughout the whole period i had windows machines.

yes, I already do that anyway... I usually stick with 8x

i don't have a windows machine any longer...
this is the first time in many years that I have only had windows. Been using various linux distros for many years (stand-alone, or dual-boot with win).

In fact, these probs have been encouraging me to go ahead and put a linux distro on here and start the dual-boot thing again...

I've never ripped with WMP, but I may give it a try

I haven't actually burned many CDs recently... just one about a week ago - for a friend. They told me it had no sound on the first 6 tracks, rest were ok. I copied an original CD using Nero Ultra 6, onto a CD-R.

My own problems are with ripping my CD collection into mp3s. I decided to box up all my CDs and put them away, but first I want to rip them all onto my computer so I can burn mp3 CDs. Been noticing that some ripped tracks have no sound on my computer, but most do. What's bugging me is that most tracks have sound, but some don't, that is what is confusing.

I would not have anything to do with low memory right...? I did have 1GB of RAM (2 sticks of 512), but one went bad and I had to remove it, so now I am on 512 only. Big difference in other things, like games and stuff...

Sometimes when you install NERO the PC gets confused on who is your primary default player.

Transfer the songs to your HD so you will know if its the ROM or the files.

Do like Spurster said and put the CD into a CD player so we will know if its the disc or just the way you burned it.

Make sure the file names on each song are original and not Song one song two etc...

make sure your not using windows media player 9 or 10 go back to an older version or use the nero player.

or download this to make sure the MP3 files are legit.
