I have a Western Digital 1TB and a Seagate 250GB. Several months ago my WD stopped working, its wheels would turn, but it wouldn't show up on my computer. I shook it like a baby and it started working again. I've had no problems since. The Seagate's always been money.

I bought a 400GB internal Seagate bought a year ago and added my own case. It's acted kinda suspect on a few occasions, but still working as of today.

I recently bought a Western Digital Elements 1TB (931GB). I can't comment on it's durability since I've only had it for a few weeks, but it's pretty good and the price is right.

I've got a Western Digital 1 TB external hard drive. It has worked flawlessly, even after (accidentally) dropping it a few times)

Here is the Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digita...4554210&sr=8-1

I have had this for over a year and it's been beat up drop and abused because it small and runs off the USB for power so no need for a plug.

The main reason it's been moved so much is because I have all my music and movies on it. So both my brothers borrow it and plug it into their Xbox or PS3 and it will play the moves straight off of it as well as the music.

I recommend Seagate External Hard Drive 200GB it is a 7,200rpm, 3.5-inch hard drive with a capacity of 200GB and an 8MB cache, of the same type you would fit internally, but built into an external case and equipped with both USB 2.0 and FireWire connections. Plug the drive into a spare socket on your PC, power it up and Windows XP sees it as a new, available drive which you can write to and read from immediately.

I need to resurrect this thread. I'm getting a "Windows - delayed write error..." constantly while I have a usb external Maxtor drive connected. It is really irritating. So far, nothing seems to be wrong, ie I am transferring files and folders to and from the drive.
The message constantly popping is extremely irritating though. also, when I want to unplug it, it tells me "drive cannot be stopped now, try again later", even if I have not done anything with the drive for an hour.

I googled and googled and I see many others have this issue. Most say it is a Windows problem (which I can easily believe).

    any suggestions or workarounds?

PS: I need to go back to using linux, I miss it...

I've got a 500GB iomega that has been money, so far. It doesn't have a FireWire connection, but I haven't dumped anything massive on it yet.

Probably some program has some file open. A quick google come up with this program:

    Process Explorer
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/s.../bb896653.aspx

I haven't used it, but it looks useful.
