    Stars ready to shine
    Express-News

NBA All-Star Weekend gets under way tonight and wraps up Sunday with the 58th All-Star Game. Each of the following events will be held at US Airways Center in Phoenix and will be televised by TNT. The Express-News takes a look at some things to watch, with comments from NBA writer Mike Monroe, who will cover this weekend's festivities:

    Rookie Challenge

8 p.m.: The top two picks in the 2007 draft square off as Portland’s Greg Oden (injured last season, therefore a first-year player now) leads a team of nine rookies against Texas-ex Kevin Durant (above) of Oklahoma City and eight other second-year players. Page 3E

    Spurs connection

None, unless you count Luis Scola, to whom the Spurs held signing rights for years before trading him to Houston.

    Mike Monroe says ...

The rookies have lots more firepower than the sop res; they’ll take pride in beating them.

    All-Star Saturday Night

7 p.m.: The annual events carnival — shooting stars (the San Antonio team of Tim Duncan, David Robinson and Becky Hammon returns to defend its le), skills challenge (a two-round timed “obstacle course” with dribbling, passing and shooting), H-O-R-S-E (new this year), 3-point shootout (self-explanatory) and slam dunk contest (ditto).

    Spurs connection

San Antonio teams have won two of the first four shooting stars compe ions, which features NBA and WNBA stars teaming with former NBA greats ... Tony Parker is entered in the skills challenge ... Roger Mason Jr. is in the 3-point shootout field.

    Mike Monroe says ...

If they let Mason shoot all his shots from the Christmas Day corner, he’s a lock to win.

    58th All-Star Game

7 p.m.: The Eastern Conference All-Stars rallied to win last year’s game in New Orleans, 134-128. The East has won three of the past four games.

    Spurs connection

Tim Duncan is a Western Conference starter for the 10th time in his 11 All-Star appearances ... Tony Parker, a West reserve, is an All-Star for the third time.

    Mike Monroe says ...

Kobe and Shaq and Phil ... oh, my. Will this be a reunion to remember?

Last year TD, Dave and Becky dominated that game. Let's hope for that again
