«Tony, vous êtes avec trois sélections un des Européens les plus capés au All-Star Game, si on met à part Dirk Nowitzki (8). Qu'est-ce que cela signifie pour vous désormais ?
D'abord, on travaille dur pour y être et c'est donc toujours un honneur d'être retenu. La première fois, on regarde partout, on ne se rend pas trop compte. La troisième, on profite beaucoup plus. Maintenant, y'aller deux, puis trois fois, cela commence à compter. Mais n'ayez crainte, je vais essayer de faire une Nowitzki, y aller six ou sept fois, c'est toujours un objectif. Et là, on a l'impression de faire vraiment partie de la famille.

Franchement, j'adore le basket que l'on joue actuellement. On produit vraiment un bon basket avec de grosses victoires à l'extérieur. C'est vrai que la saison avait commencé difficilement, avec la blessure de Ginobili, la mienne aussi. Mais maintenant, on est là, on produit du beau jeu et je crois qu'on peut faire quelque chose de bien cette année. A présent, je pense qu'on aurait encore besoin d'un big man (intérieur) pour épauler Tim Duncan et grossir notre raquette, parce que lorsque tu joues les grosses équipes comme les Lakers avec les Gasol, les Bynum (actuellement blessé, ndlr), Tim, il souffre. Bon, je ne sais pas si on va faire quelque chose avant la limite des trades (les franchises peuvent transférer des joueurs jusqu'au 19 février), mais un intérieur nous ferait du bien.

Mais quand le maire de Lyon, Gérard Collomb, dit à nos confrères de Basket News que votre arrivée «va changer la donne, y compris au gouvernement», on se dit que vous allez tout simplement trop vite pour le basket français. Et ça, n'est pas une invention de journalistes...
Moi, j'essaye juste de faire avancer les choses. J'ai juste envie que le basket français progresse, qu'il soit à une meilleure place en Europe. On ne peut pas me reprocher de bouger, d'essayer de raisonner avec deux ou trois coups d'avance. Tout ce que je veux, c'est que l'ASVEL soit forte, qu'on ait un club qui puisse challenger les gros. Après, ce que je trouve dommage, c'est l'histoire avec Vincent (Collet). C'est Yvan (Mainini, président de la Fédération française) le boss, c'est lui qui choisit mais je trouverais dommage qu'on punisse Vincent Collet simplement parce que je suis actionnaire de l'ASVEL. Vous me connaissez, vous me suivez depuis le début, je suis facile à coacher, j'ai toujours respecté mes entraîneurs, pourquoi je changerais ? Vincent connaît le basket, l'équipe de France, il était déjà assistant en 2003, il est compétent. Mais attention, si ce n'est pas lui, ça ne veut pas dire que Jean-Luc Monschau ou Philippe Hervé ne sont pas compétents. Et s'ils devaient être choisis, ma motivation sera la même, je jouerai avec le même engagement quel que soit le coach qu'Yvan nommera pour l'équipe de France.

Ronny Turiaf prétend qu'à quinze ans, à l'INSEP, ensemble, vous pensiez déjà à diriger un club après votre carrière...

L'Academy servira à faire de la formation à la française, un mini-INSEP si vous voulez mais c'est plus un projet pour l'avenir. En tout cas, je ne veux pas concurrencer l'INSEP, il fait son travail avec les jeunes qu'il détecte et nous, on en aidera d'autres...»
