    will Vince be ing again?

Key matchup: Vince Carter vs. Bruce Bowen. The 43 points Carter scored in last month's meeting between the teams were the third-most the Spurs have allowed since the arrival of Tim Duncan. Only Allen Iverson (46 on Feb. 12, 1999) and Kobe Bryant (44 on Feb. 14, 2003) have scored more. Carter likely would have exceeded both players had he not been ejected. He and Bowen already had each been given a technical for bumping heads when Carter misfired on a 3-point attempt early in the fourth quarter. After the two players got their legs tangled up, Carter spun around and ran at Bowen with his fists clenched, but his arms at his side. The officials gave Carter a personal foul — TV replays showed he might have kicked up his legs to trip Bowen — and another technical. It wasn't the first run-in between the players. Carter sprained his left ankle last season when he landed on Bowen after missing a similar shot. Afterward, he inferred the Spurs forward had intentionally tried to hurt him. Nets coach Lawrence Frank said the referees should have known, "Bruce Bowen ended Vince's season by stepping under him on his jump shot." The referees didn't know because it didn't happen. Carter missed only six games after the injury then returned and played 23 more.(Ludden/Express News)

..just let him score 20+, Bruce.

Just a personal off-the-subject rant, but there is no excuse for a professional writer to confuse and misuse the words infer/imply. Get it right, Ludden.

I can't wait to see the Bruce vs VC match up again. I don't think there will be any drama though, refs should be paying alot of attention to it this time around. Still curious to see how we will fare without Timmy and Rasho playing but being sick (at least I think he'll play)

Both infer and imply are misused in this context. Franks did neither. He came out and said that Bowen ended Carter's season. I would have to take exception to this if I were Bowen, even if it were through league channels. What Franks said was libel.

Usage Note: Infer is sometimes confused with imply, but the distinction is a useful one. When we say that a speaker or sentence implies something, we mean that it is conveyed or suggested without being stated outright: When the mayor said that she would not rule out a business tax increase, she implied (not inferred) that some taxes might be raised. Inference, on the other hand, is the activity performed by a reader or interpreter in drawing conclusions that are not explicit in what is said: When the mayor said that she would not rule out a tax increase, we inferred that she had been consulting with some new financial advisers, since her old advisers were in favor of tax reductions.
Ginofan, the above quote was directly below the dictionary.com definition you provided. Two contradictory messages within one citation--but I believe that in common American English usage, Ludden's statement is incorrect.

Vince Carter claims that he injured his finger in the first quarter and couldn't grip the ball or shoot it well for the rest of the game.

Not that he's making excuses or anything.

It was reported that he went for X-rays after the game.
