Kellogg's Brand Damaged By Dumping Michael Phelps
![]()
Dumping Michael Phelps over the now notorious photo of him taking a bong rip is not looking like the best move for Kellogg. Pot activists, who insist they make up a large share of consumers of Kellogg products, organized a boycott of the company. The boycott resonated with Kellogg customers to such a degree that when you called Kellogg, the first audio recording you heard was not about the nation-wide salmonella outbreak that had sickened dozens of people, but was a message for callers who were concerned about the company's relationship with Phelps.
Now comes a report that severing the relationship has actually damaged Kellogg's brand. Silicon Alley Insider reports:
Out of the 5,600 company reputations Vanno monitors, Kellogg ranked ninth before it booted Phelps. Now it's ranked 83. Not even an industry-wide peanut scare inflicted as much damage on the food company's reputation. They have a fascinating graph illustrating all this which I urge you to check out.
if they want someone to market their products....
GET TIM DUNCAN
Couple of ideas for new products:
Raisin Hemp
Stonees
Bongo Puffs
Just goes to show, most people don't care when it comes to natural herbal remedies.
Advocatus diaboli: Pot is nil. The cult of Michael Phelps is mighty.
Good... it's nice to see that brands will get dumped on for doing stupid .
I didn't know there was a national boycott underway. Only the one in the troll forum. Anways, good news. you Kellogg.
They should have consulted with their faithful “Wake & Bake” customers before dumping Phelps…
ahh-tennnn-shun!
Good. Kellogs and anyone who would seek to disparage Phelps when he's such a source of national pride.
Kelloggs isn't trying to disparage anyone. They don't care. They just believe that the number of uptight, anal, non-stoners who would quit buying their products if they kept Phelps exceeds the number of stoners who will quit buying their products because they dumped him. And they're probably right.
It may not even be that complicated. It's a tough economy and they might just be using this as an excuse to get out of an endorsement contract that is probably pretty pricey.

The drop from ninth-ranked to 83rd-ranked probably felt a little funny.
Pro-MJ forces exaggerate their real influence IMO.
I'm still running with a craven and tactless press corps needlessly runs down the personal life of an Olympic hero as being the most eligible motif here. Eight golds in one OG has some sway.
