The Lakers apparently are not content to wait until Andrew Bynum returns — or not — in time for the playoffs. Phil Jackson said Monday he would talk to Mitch Kupchak about acquiring free agents Drew Gooden or Joe Smith.
The New York Post reported that although unconfirmed reports have Smith already has headed to the Cavaliers, the Lakers and Hornets are prepapred to commit past this season to Smith once he clears waivers today.
Smith, a journeyman, has an expiring salary of $4.795 million.
Stay tuned for an update.

Dont really need them, once we get Drew healthy we will roll past the playoffs and win the chip
plus Smiths knees are as weak as my grandma's
but I thought they had the reincarnation of Wilt Chamberlain coming back for the playoffs???
Joe Smith would be in the MVP voting if he didn't play the first half of the year in NBA Antarctica
actually they do
the lakers didn't spend any of their MLE this summer....
no roster spot
Not true, they do have a roster spot.
actually they do again
he hates L.A.
Smith dont like ""
but in all seriousness, the best beat writer in the game, said that Joe Smith would have gone to the Celtics first, but when they signed Moore, he no longer wanted a buyout until Wallace went down. He didn't want to sign with a team as an insurance policy, he wanted to play a significant role. He said he didn't want to do that to his family to sit on the bench and chase a ring. So that is why I believe he comes to the Cavs, and why it is assumed he will because he will actually start for us.
all this talk about him going to L.A. is to just build a meaningful storyline for when the 2 teams meet in the Finals.
It will be built as, the series when Joe Smith picked the Cavs over the Lakers and carried them to victory on his shoulders
Joe Smith is not that important
oh, alright, nice to see you have a sense of humor
they just dont want the other contenders to get them.
That's it...Angelbelow!
It's a straight up power move by the Lakers.
+1
As much as I don't want it to happen, they have every right to pursue these players (even if it is just to prevent a contender from signing them). If I were a fan of the Lakers .......... I would root for them to pursue these players as well.
Joe is a solide role player no doubt about that but i dont see the lakeshow need to sign this guy..since drew is due back in april, we're already stacked at the forward spot.
