Return for Ginobili, rest for Duncan imminent
    By Jeff McDonald

Odds are good Manu Ginobili makes his triumphant return from his second ankle injury of the season within the week. Odds are just as good that Tim Duncan soon gets a night off to rest his sore knees.

There's a decent chance both those eventualities occur on the same night, Wednesday in Atlanta.

Asked after this morning's shootaround to assess Ginobili's rehabilitation, Spurs coach Gregg Popovich indicated everything is on schedule.

"He hasn't had any setbacks, if that's what you're asking," Popovich said. "He's continued to progress. Everything has been fine."

After tonight's contest against Golden State, Ginobili will have missed 18 consecutive games with a stress reaction. Asked how near Ginobili might be to actually playing, Popovich said, "We're getting real close."

As Ginobili nears a return, Duncan nears a rest. The Spurs All-Star power forward is battling knee problems, and Popovich has said he plans to sit Duncan occasionally to keep him fresh for the playoffs.

The Spurs face the Warriors tonight and are in Atlanta on Wednesday. Asked if he intends to hold Duncan out at some point during the back-to-back, Popovich indicated that was a possibility.

"It's something we'll talk about," he said.

I wish they'd sit Duncan tonight. We can beat GS without him.

I agree, I think resting Tim this game would be much better then resting him for the Atlanta Game. We should have agreat chance at beating GS without Tim since they usualy go small anyway.

I disagree..I'd rather let Duncan sit tomorrow, and have Manu come back the same night..

I wouldn't want to see Manu playing a back-to-back so early in his comeback..and I wouldn't want to play anybody right now without Duncan AND Manu, since we need wins and they aren't coming easy..

Duncan plays tonight, and rests tomorrow..Manu plays tomorrow..sounds good to me..

Without Duncan, the Warriors would put up about 140,000 points against the Spurs.

    Give or take a couple.

Man I don't like the way that sounds...he should rest Timmy tonight and play him tomorrow. Like everybody here has already said...the Warriors play alot of small ball, having no need for Tim. Manu coming back tomorrow sounds good to me though....

Pretty much echoing the majority in sitting TD tonight and having him return with Manu tomorrow.

I kinda like the idea of playing both tonight and playing neither one tomorrow. A split is survivable. Going 0-2 would be cause for concern.

I don't have a problem with sitting TD.....dude looks like he's hurting or waiting for the playoffs.

We need to get some burn for Drew.

I love how everyone here pretends how they have a ing crystal ball. The Spurs need Tim to stomp GS. Last time Pop went to all smallball and that ed the whole game up. I'd prefer no Tim/Tim and Manu, so Manu can come back with Timmy and Tony there.

I don't give a who plays, who scores, margin of victory; bring in Ron Mercer, Charlie Ward....the Spurs need a W bad. They need to win 10 more games to secure the 2nd seed. The clock is running. This game has to be put in the win column.

Spurs need a win- if Manu can play tonight, he should. Rest them both in Atlanta on a back-to-back losing an hour traveling East.

Anyone believing Manu will play more than 10-15 max in his first game back is crazy.

I'll be at the game tonight. I wish Manu was playing. If Spurs do well, hopefully Tim can get some rest. Sigh-I just don't think it really helps the damn tendonosis much. Oh well, some rest is always better then no rest.

GS is the low hanging fruit. You make sure you take it. The Spurs could potentially lose to Atlanta even with TD playing and 10-15 minutes of Manu. It's the NBA, happens. I rather be 1-1 after 2 games that potentially 0-2.

Despite all the negative speculation, I think the Spurs take the next 3 games relatively easily... they'll be ready.
