Included in the usual huddled mass of microphones and TV cameras filling the Spurs' locker room late Monday was a reporter from Slovenian Playboy. He had come a few thousand miles to profile and photograph (clothed, presumably) Rasho Nesterovic, the country's top NBA export.
Provided, that is, Nesterovic hasn't lost that standing.
Beno Udrih, Nesterovic's countryman, made his first NBA start a memorable one, scoring 25 points — the most ever by a Slovenian player in the league — as the Spurs routed New Orleans 112-89 in front of 18,797 at the SBC Center.
"Maybe now," Nesterovic said with a smile, "I'm second."
Udrih received top billing for one night, at least. With Tony Parker sidelined because of a left quadriceps contusion, Udrih helped the Spurs avoid their first three-game losing streak of the season.
"They obviously have bigger plans ahead," Hornets coach Byron Scott said. "They're not just getting ready for the playoffs. They want to get a parade down here again this year."
The Spurs, who led by as many as 40, would prefer to get whole again before making a championship run. While Manu Ginobili joined Parker on the sidelines — the third game in a row he's missed — the Spurs did regain the services of Tim Duncan.
After sitting out the team's losses to Phoenix and Denver because of a sprained right ankle and sore back, Duncan totaled 18 points and 13 rebounds in 26 minutes. Duncan, who didn't play in the fourth quarter, said he felt good after the game.
"I thought he looked fresh," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.
Popovich could have been talking about several players. Monday's victory started where Saturday's loss ended: on the backboards. Having allowed one too many offensive rebounds to the Denver Nuggets, the Spurs outrebounded the Hornets 27-13 in the first half.
"Some days (rebounding) eludes us for some reason," Popovich said. "We tend to let Timmy, or whoever the big guys are, rebound, and forget to do it with all five guys."
The Spurs also took advantage of a New Orleans team in the throes of rebuilding by shooting 54.7 percent. More important, they assisted on 29 of their 41 baskets.
"Everybody just shared the ball real well," Duncan said.
Udrih and Brent Barry (17 points, seven assists) had a lot to do with that. In the first quarter, Udrih split P.J. Brown and Dan au with a perfect bounce pass to Bruce Bowen for a layup.
Any thoughts the Hornets had of making a serious second-half run quickly vanished when Udrih drilled back-to-back 3-pointers to widen the gap to 69-39. He scored 12 points and made all five of his shots in the first eight minutes of the quarter.
"Beno did a good job of just letting the game come to him," Popovich said. "He didn't force anything. He moved the ball really well. When he had shots, he didn't hesitate. He just took them."
Barry did the same. After missing 22 of his previous 27 3-point attempts, he made 3 of 6 on Monday. He threw up his arms in relief after making one shot.
"That's really important for (Udrih and Barry) because that's the depth we talked about at the beginning of the year, and I haven't really seen that for about a month," Popovich said. "For those guys to join in tonight the way Devin's playing lately, hopefully we'll get a little bit of that depth back."
In addition to playing in front of five Slovenian reporters, Udrih also had two longtime friends in town. That didn't include Nesterovic, who provided him some advice.
"Rasho said before the game, 'Don't be nervous,'" Udrih said. "'When you come from the bench it's the same: Just play your game.'
"I was just trying to put the ball in everybody's hands and keep everybody happy."

I prefer Slovenian Penthouse myself. I just love that forum:
"...while I was out back cleaning the crap off the pigs, three rotund women asked me to help them with their buggy. As we walked toward the road, I accidently brushed one of the womans breasts with my knee. A tingle rushed through by body, the likes I haven't felt since my father brought home a sheep from the market. The lady smiled at me and the sight of that perfect, russet tooth excited me even more....."
