Mason hopes Manu will help beat the blitz
    Jeff McDonald

NEW ORLEANS — In his moonlighting role as the Spurs' backup point guard for most of the month, Roger Mason Jr. has spent much of his time being outnumbered.

He'd come off a pick and the opposing team — with seemingly nothing better to do — would blitz him with a pair of defenders. For Mason, it led to a rash of turnovers and a little bit of self-doubt.

Mason has three words for blitzing defenders now: Bring it on.

“Now, there's another shooter over there,” Mason said. “And it's Manu Ginobili.”

Ginobili recently returned from a month and a half layoff while dealing with a sore right ankle. No individual Spurs player stands to benefit more from his comeback than Mason.

For the past 14 games Mason, the team's starter at shooting guard, has been running the point with the second unit. The experiment has been inconsistent — Mason's scoring has been down over that stretch, and his turnovers up.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich has defended Mason's work at the point, saying he just needed more time to become comfortable with his new secondary role. It turns out, Mason only needed more time with Ginobili.

“One thing it does automatically is it brings another shooter there,” Mason said. “When I pass him the ball, I know he's a threat. It opens it up for everybody. Recently, we've been calling a lot of pick-and-rolls, a lot of plays for me. It will actually help me more.”

Parker's 10K: Barring something unforeseen and potentially disastrous for the Spurs, Tony Parker should become the fourth player in franchise history to reach the 10,000-point plateau tonight in New Orleans.

Parker, 26 years old and in his eighth season, needs just seven points to hit that milestone.

George Gervin, David Robinson and Tim Duncan are the only other Spurs enshrined in the 10,000-point club. In NBA history, only 25 other guards have reached that milestone.

Parker is averaging a career-best 21.9 points and 6.9 assists this season, and has been instrumental in the Spurs' survival as Duncan and Ginobili have been slowed with injuries.

“It's the most he's had to carry us by himself for so long,” Popovich said. “He's played so well for so long. He deserved his All-Star status, for sure, and he's played better after his selection, actually.”

Oberto skips trip: Center Fabricio Oberto did not accompany the Spurs on their trip to New Orleans. He remained in San Antonio while dealing with a heart ailment.

If all goes well, he is expected to be cleared to play by the end of the week.

Wow, I thought Silas would have had 10,000 for sure, even counting the two basically wasted seasons with his injuries, but his Spurs total was 9,219 points. Special K is at 8,248 in a San Antonio uniform. It gives pretty good context showing the stupid haters how important Tony Parker has been in this franchise's history.

Wow, never knew Parker was already the 4th leading scorer in franchise history.

For those in the know, what are the career point totals of Gervin, Robinson, Duncan, and Parker?

I thought the Mason experiment at PG should have been scrapped weeks ago, not sure if that's going to change even with Manu back...

but the most important thing from this article is that Oberto is doing well, and has been cleared to play with the team

McDonald does need a fact checker. Parker hasn't cracked the the top 250 all-time scorers yet, and there are at least 50 guards ahead of him. Perhaps he meant only 25 point guards ahead of him.

Also, while there was some attention to TP's upcoming milestone, I haven't seen mention of another nice, round number. With his 11 points in the Clipper game, Michael Finley has exactly 17000 career points, placing him 11th on the active list and 74th all-time.

This loss will push the Hornets to 28L and 7th seed, only one L ahead of Mavs.

The only thing keeping the Hornets in the playoffs is that Suns are 4L out of 8th seed, which is where the Hornets will probably land.

If Spurs hang onto 2nd seed, it looks like they will start with either Mavs or Hornets.

BTW and for the record,in the playoffs Manu has scored 2157 Pts and Parker has scored 1710 pts with one more season tham Manu
Manu's ppg in the playoffs 18.4
    Parker's ppg in playoffs 16.0
Hate to burst your bubble but... you've got that reversed. Parker scored 2157 points (18.4 ppg and #39 all-time list in playoffs points) while Manu scored 1710 (16 ppg and #74 all-time).

Parker is #7 active in playoffs points and Manu is #11. The 3 youngest guys in front of Parker are Kobe, Hamilton and Dirk, all 30 years old.

    Check http://www.basketball-reference.com/..._career_p.html

With 10k points, Tony is not in the top 250 all-time NBA/ABA list, and is #44 active.

He is #133 all-time in assists, #34 all-time in playoffs assists and #6 active in playoffs assists.

With 31 more minutes played he will pass Avery Johnson in the all-time Spurs list to reach 5th place. With 298 more points he will pass Silas to 4th place (counting the season with the Dallas Chaparrals as the Spurs).

Is that enough stats for you?

If he gets extended two years, and has good health and three (counting his last year on this contract) seasons like the previous two before this one, he should.

BTW, I think that Tony will get up there to 20K. He's still only 26, and has hit his stride. I doubt it takes 8 years for the next 10K. Probably more like 6 or 7, and that would only put him at 32-33.

you're right and I was wrong about total pts in playoffs games.
But,If we're gonna take both players total pts since they became pro I know for a fact that Manu doubles TP.
Manu became Pro back in the mid 90's.
Europe = fewer games = fewer points. Since Tony's been pro since he was 15 or 16, I HIGHLY doubt if Manu doubles his points.

Yeah, well if you add the points Parker scored while in France (as a teenager), he would have hit the milestone a while ago too.
The point is that we talking about NBA, and Spurs career here.

^^well,if you take the points he scored since he became Pro vs. the points scored by Parker since He became Pro,Manu probably doubles TP(Eat the now)
    Tony became pro at 17
and you can't compare the 40-60 games in Europe with less chance of scoring with 100-120 games in NBA for the spurs
and Tony have 2157 pts in PO for 1710 for Manu

It's kinda dumb to compare the two as far as points. Manu has played one less season than Tony in the NBA and Pop has always shuffled him between starting and the bench and kept his minutes down. Tony's been the starter at point since his second week on the team.
