or was it Mason playing with Manu?..

    a few things first..

Mason will NEVER be a good PG, so that isn't going to change..he's not a good passer, and he can't penetrate like a PG is expected to..

we don't need him to do that though..he just needs to produce like he normally does..since Manu went out, he's back to being the Mason we were used to seeing earlier in the season..he's still playing PG, so nothing has really changed..

so was that really the problem with his production? or was it simply his chemistry with Manu in the lineup?..

Mason was sucking the PG position long before Manu came back for the last time.

When RMJ was originally struggling at point guard, Manu was out. When Manu came back, that's when RMJ started to look a little bit better.

Then Pop went with Vaughn until Manu got hurt. I think RMJ just settled down and readjusted to the NBA's adjustment on him. Like you said, he's never going to be a great point guard but he can be adequate.

Or maybe he just looks better because we saw the Jacque Vaughn alternative

my mistake then..I actually don't know how I forgot that, since I remember commenting that I thought Manu's return would help Mason LOL..

the stats do support that he's been better with Manu out though..

Overall though, RMJ does play better without Manu around. He's much more aggressive and isn't worried about stepping on any toes. He realizes that the Spurs need him to shoot as much as possible. With Manu added to the equation, shooting as much as possible isn't always the right move.

Hopefully that is something that works itself out once the two get to go through training camp next year.

Do we have to analyze this from the fact he was playing 10 less minutes per game when Manu was out there? When Manu is out there Roger has a lesser role, including less minutes and less touches. So he has to be more effective in a more limited capacity.

Kind of sounds like his situation in D.C. when "Agent 0" went down, which created his buzz around the league.

the point about Arenas is good too..Mason put up very efficient numbers with Arenas out..

combining that with his ability to make big shots..Mason seems to really enjoy stepping into the spotlight, and making the most of his opportunities..

Hopefully he goes nuclear when Tim & Tony are on the bench at the same time.

He must have got that pull up 5 feet behind top of the arc with 20 seconds on the clock shot from Arenas too. Nice when he makes it.

He plays well as a SG, I don't think he has the ability to pass like most point guards or is going to anytime soon.

spurs system is designed for scoring point guards anyways. parker practically plays like a shooting guard and the spurs obviously liked hill's ability to score in college. if they wanted a true point guard, they probably would have drafted chalmers. mason was the spark off the bench during his time with the wizards and he played pg. he did fine on the wizards when he was the primary option off the bench and i think he will adjust well to being the spurs' main scorer when parker sits. also with gooden as a legit low post option, mason will have more room to operate.

I would agree with the original post. Mason's PG play hasn't really improved any, however his shooting and at ude have vastly improved since Manu is out of the lineup. To put it another way, he's playing better in spite of the moments he has to run the point. This is a return to what we saw from Mason earlier in the year when he was lighting it up from the SG.

At least now people will hopefully stop complaining about RMJ at the backup in the playoffs since we know Hill definitely wont be seeing any minutes. Also the alternative backup PG is a scary thought.

I like the guy and admit he's been a very valuable FA pickup for the Spurs, but Mason is still a terrible, terrible finisher.

Agreed, I cringe when he drives to the basket almost as bad as I do when Bruce does.

Can't believe people are seriously sleeping on Bruce's left-handed finger roll he's developed over the past few years....IT'S MONEY!!
