Boston Celtics guard Ray Allen was suspended one game without pay for elbowing Cleveland Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao in the groin on Sunday, the NBA announced on Tuesday.

Allen, who averages 18.2 points and 3.5 rebounds, will serve his suspension when the Celtics visit the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday. Allen will be docked more than $167,000 in salary. Kevin Garnett also will miss the game to rest his strained knee.
Tempers boiled in the third quarter of Boston's 107-76 loss at Cleveland on Sunday when Varejao and Allen got tangled under the basket after a free throw.
Varejao flung Boston's guard to the floor, and Allen responded with a well placed elbow into the forward's groin area. Both players jawed at each other before getting technical fouls.
"It was a dirty play," Allen said. "He locked my arm and threw me to the ground. I wasn't going to allow him to think he could do whatever he wanted. I'm always going to stand up for myself. It's one thing for a team to be beating us, but they're not going to walk all over us."
The frizzy-haired Varejao had his own take.
"You don't hit a man in his [groin]," he said. "He doesn't like Brazilians or he doesn't like my hair."

I don't blame him, Varejao does this all the time.
I don't think elbowing a guy in the nuts is "standing up for yourself," is it being a cheapshot artist.
That is weak. Obviously, they can't mentally handle being -slapped, so close to the playoffs, by the eventual champions.

I hate to say this Ray Ray, but Scoreboard tends to say otherwise.
To Allen's credit, however, Varejao probably deserved some retaliation. I'd bet money I'd be going after Vaejao quite a bit if we ever lined up against each other. Of course, a man doesn't try to hit another man in the knutz in an on-court scuffle. At least a real man doesn't.
Floppajao is an instigator, a whiner, and the biggest flopper in the NBA. He deserves more than a quick kick in the nuts.

The league refused to suspend Trevor Ariza or Lamar Scrotum earlier this season, for some really dangerous cheap shots. I don't have a lot of respect for their morning-after decision making process.
I think Ariza got a $10K fine, and Lamar Scrotum got nothing. The story I read said that this suspension cost Ray Allen about $170K. I dislike Ray Allen more than just about any player in the league, but somehow that doesn't seem equitable.
The fact that there was no mention of Varejao slinging another player to the floor doesn't impress me either. I can't justify Allen throwing an elbow, but what NBA player is going to get thrown to the floor and laugh it off? The league just said (without really saying it) that what Varejao did was okay.
I see two teams that are bullet-proof.
