Bonus though is that I get to buy a new one, even though the last one I had was p-p-p-pimpin'.

Now, to be clear, insurance covers most of the cost, thus the reason price really means nothing to me. But insurance doesnt cover all cost. Still dropped some good $$ on this, regardless.

Totally worth it to conquer the New World in 1920x1200 4XAA gloriousness via Empire:Total War.

    I hate you, DR.

    My setup:

Intel Q6600 2.4 Ghz Quad Core Processor
    4 GB of DDR3 RAM
    512mb Radeon 4870 vid card
    1 TB 32 mb cache Seagate HDD @ 7200rpm
    250 GB Hitachi 7200rpm HDD
    Acer 22" Display
2.1 Swan M1 High-Fidelity speakers (best 2.1 setup I've ever heard by a wide margin)
    Xbox 360 controller for Windoze
    Ultrasone HFI-780 Headphones

I just moved the system around a bit, so the wiring isn't as bad now.

Damn, that's still a nice system. Your rig there I'd think was better than the one that got stolen. You obviously built that yourself, you've made your "All Things Computer" knowledge pretty evident (you and BB) .

But you mentioned being really impressed with your speakers. I'm looking to upgrade, still using an old Dell set (pretty nice, all things considered).

I was looking at the Logitech 5500, which do you suggest?

12gb max, depends more on your mobo than Vista.

Used to. I might play COD:Modern Warfare every now and then because I was into it for awhile. I bought TF2 (Orange Box...Portal, ftw), but just can't get into it. I never liked unrealistic shooters, don't know why.

Mostly strategy and rpg these days, as I got older. It's my irrepressable disdain for other humans, LOL. A little Gears of War too, but console shooters aren't the same otherwise.

I don't doubt that your top-o-the-line Dell is probably pretty badass, but that doesn't mean you "beat" his system. He's one GPU away from slightly less than astounding and 6gb away from absolutely, positively elite (especially with two 4870, man I never knew Radeon took the belt from nvidia last year...by a wiiiiiiide margin, too).

If you rreally want to compare, download+install+post from a program called Everest.

Well, that's a pretty wide can of worms.

What kind of speakers are you looking for? 2.1? 5.1?

What price range would you like to stay within?

Lastly, are these going to be used for gaming, movies, or music primarily? And if music, what kind? There are tons of computer speakers, some artificially "enhance" the sound, which might make it more fun to listen to but won't be as accurate and would be much less precise for certain kinds of music, such as classical.

    That's cute.

    For the following:

    NZXT Aluminum Computer Case
    Intel Q6600 Processor @ 2.4 Ghz
    4 GB of DDR2 RAM @ 667 mhz
Western Digital 250 GB HDD @ 7200 rpm
512 mb Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS (G92 core)
    Acer 22" display with 1680 x 1050 resolution, 4 ms latency (I think)
    Windows Vista Premium Edition
    Thustmaster Force Feedback Joystick

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
    Call of Duty 2
    World in Conflict
Microsoft Flight Simulator X (with expansion pack)
    The Godfather
and several other games I don't feel like listing now.

I paid $950 total, cash, for the entire setup. This was actually one year ago this month. All I had to do was supply my own keyboard and mouse (not a problem considering I already had them for my laptop). Everything on the computer had a warranty still in effect except the case and the video card.

And if I get bored gaming on my small display, I can move my DVI to HDMI cable converter over to my 1080p 42" Panasonic Plasma Viera TV. Sometimes I do that, but I like being able to watch TV while I'm gaming, especially if I'm watching a game. And it sounds amazing, with a BIC DV62 6 inch 2 way center channel speaker, two 8 ohm Mirage OM-12 Omnipolar Tower Speakers with a frequency response of 32hz to 22 khz (producing enough bass that I don't want or need a subwoofer), and two Insignia 6 1/2" Bass Reflex Bookshelf Surround Speakers. This is all being driven by a Pioneer Elite VSX 21 receiver.

Your computer might be a little faster than mine, but at least I know what I own and what's under the hood of my system.

2 main functions; Gaming and Music.

    Gaming is self explanatory.

Music is wide-ranging, from classical to metal, but really no rap.

Oh, the Fatality card is 7.1 I believe, so speakers that are 5.1 should suffice.

Depending on your space and price, I would always recommend home theatre speakers over multimedia. Even decent bookshelves will blow away almost any computer speak. But if you're looking for "a pretty good sound", the Z5500s are among the best computer speakers out there. Also to consider are the Creative GigaWorks ProGamer G500. Otherwise, look to home-theatre speakers (Onkyo and BIC make some incredible budget speakers). The sky is the limit for price and sound quality in that situation.
