I was a big fan of Gooden until the last few games..
I'm just tired of guys like Gooden and Bonner on this team..I wanna see some defensive-minded guys that can contribute to the team when their shot is off..
I know he didn't play that well this last game, but if you only get 8 mins of playing time and seeing this stiff redhead get a gazillion more playing time than you, you'll definitely be walking away. In the short time Gooden has been with us, he has shown he can do a lot more than this pathetic excuse of an NBA player Matt Bonner. I don't know why Pop doesn't give Gooden enough chance even in games where he's doing well, especially in a game like this where no role player can score, at least if Pop gave Gooden a bit more playing time, you know he'll keep on being aggressive and he's gonna get fouls which will help us.
Unless Pop says (assuming what he says has a lot of bearing on Gooden) he'll get more playing time once he goes through a complete training camp and does well, Gooden is good as gone.
Oh wait, maybe if we throw a truckload of money at him he might stay. (Which is least likely the case esp if we're looking for Bowen replacement.)

This is not to excuse Gooden's poor play, as of late, but there is a chance he could be hurt from that crash landing that he had in Game 2.
He showed enouugh that makes me believe he warrants another look, if they could resign him to a reasonable contract. His low post scoring and rebounding ability are ideal to a team that struggles so much offensively. After all, low-post scorers are not falling out of the sky.

I agree. I was just discussing the same concern. He was playing pretty well and scoring for us. Then he had 2 bad games which perhaps had to with him being a bit beat up form that bad fall he took in Game 2.
good riddance, his type of play doesn't fit here
If he's willing to work on his defensive game, then I'd say keep him.
However, I'm very pessimistic about Pop's coaching abilities when it comes to developing players at the moment.
Gooden seems like the kind of player Pop likes to put in the doghouse. One mistake and he'll be riding the pine. Perhaps Gooden could change his name to Finley?
He could be hurt but who knows.
Yes, but I think he is willing to learn how to play defense. If he can do that, he will be a great asset to our team. I do think it his recent play has something to do with that little accident in game 2. His low post scoring and rebounding are great and he is a no brainer choice over Bonner.
Gooden is 3 times the player Bonner is. I'm amazed that anyone would want Gooden to leave.
I agree and this is what I do not understand about Pop. I mean he keeps Bonner in the doghouse for two years, now he can't seem to put him back in it. How could Gooden be far worse than this guy?![]()
I don't trust him. He would have to change a few things.
Exactly. You know you'll be getting something outta Gooden everytime (if not instant points, rebounds), but Bonner, not really.
With Gooden, I believe Duncan's career can be stretched a little bit more. That means less pressure on him in the post. Duncan will be the number one beneficiary of having Gooden around. Hope he tells Pop that.
i don't agree with the plp here thats saying that gooden is equally as bad as bonner. we have to look at a few things. i think pop isn't playing gooden for him really to help us.
1.) it was really impressive how Gooden has been playing for us considering the kind of inconsistent minutes he been getting. he comes in the game about 2 minutes remaining and usually play til the 7 or 8 minutes mark in the 2nd quarter, then get subbed out for the rest of the half. he has to come in and make a immediate impact with little or no time for him to really find his rhythm both on offense or defense; and still he been producing for us in that role excluding the last 2 games. you put any player in his role, its gonna be hard for him to produce.
2.) bonner is WAY WORSE than gooden. he doesn't really have to worry about his minutes, and he gets plenty of time to find his rhythm on offense and defense. he starts off the game and play till the 4 minute mark in the 1st quarter, then come back with about 7-8 minute to go and play the rest of the half. And with this kind of minutes; there's no excuse for him to be producing that kind of number for us. game 1: 0 pts, game 3: 2 pts, and game 4: 0 pts again. If gooden would have gotten Bonner's minutes in this series, i'm pretty confident he could be averaging close to 12-15 ppg with 6-8 rpg.
so all you guys saying that gooden is equally as bad as bonner must be blind. bonner has the perfect opportunity to contribute, while gooden is put into the toughest situation, where he always want to make a contribution in that short span of time that he's in.
i do believe that gooden is going to walk, cause any compe or in his shoes will be pissed as at his role on the team. for the past month, he been our most productive big man, and constantly outplaying matt bonner, but still POP doesn't increase his role, and still go back to the guy who have failed the team over and over again in Bonner.
obviously Gooden is much better than Bonner..if he was with us all year, I have no doubt that Pop would have played him more..
if we want Gooden, we'll get him back IMO..he isn't going to get significant money in this current state of the NBA..
Yes that too, it's so surprising how much impact Gooden has had considering he's not given enough time to at least warm up. It means he has to contribute right away like he has no margin for error and I gotta say he's done a commendable job.
And like I said earlier, this can do amazing things to Duncan's career. His career can be stretched a little bit more if he has Gooden on his side. Less post pressure, he can concentrate on defense a little more not having to carry so much offensive pressure. And his defense in effect, will do wonders for this team.
Great insights, I totally agree.
Do we all realize how fortunate the Spurs were to even get this guy in the first place? Here's a young power forward, with career averages of about 13 and 7, and the Spurs get him for a half-season tryout, for virtually nothing. We were all pissed, last season, when the Fakers got Gasol, a proven big, in a virtual steal of a trade. Now the Spurs get one for free and we're ready to usher him out of town after a half-season.
Are the Spurs suddenly now too talented that they don't need a big of Gooden's skills?
The other matter is the Spurs need assets that can be traded at some point down the line if need be. A 27 year old rebounding big who has averaged double figures in scoring in every season of his NBA career on a MLE level contract would be a good trading chip.
Plus it's not like the bigman rotation is that talented or set for the long term. Bonner should be the 5th big. Thomas, the 4th. Ideally the Spurs could resuscitate that Camby trade this summer and line him up next to TD in the starting lineup. Gooden would be a very nice 3rd big in the rotation. Of course, I guess we'll finally see what Mahinmi can do next season.
You are absolutely correct, SenorSpur.
Gooden is that and probably more. Pop, RC & Holt better do everything they can to keep Gooden. He has had 2 or 3 things going against him...I'm sure he is hurting more than he is letting on...coughing up blood and your throat and chest feel like for several days if not a couple weeks. Also the fact that he has been here such a short time he has been remarkable doing what he has done so far. Two off games do not make a player. Offer him what he is worth and let him work with Timmy from training camp on. Even spend some time here in the summer and get familiar with the city and other players at the practice facility. We'd be foolish to let him get away. Especially with Tim in the twilight of his career.
Well, Gasol is much better than Gooden. Also, my problem with Gooden is that he really doesn't like to pass, even when doubled. He basically hogs the ball. Needless to say, that just won't work. If he can play within the system, then of course the Spurs should keep him (if they can)
Yes, yes and yes! I do not understand people who are ragging on him at all. Do you realize how we've never had a player alongside Timmy of this caliber after DRob?
i hope gooden takes a 1 year 1 million contract this coming offseason
while we can pursue ariza i do have faith he wants to win a championship and will when ginobili comes back
Gooden would make sense in SA as a guy who can come off the bench to provide scoring up front and give TD more rest during the regular season. He's more of a #3 big than a #2 big.
