    Uhm, this swine flu thing.

Its treatable like the regular flu correct?

Now I'm hearing That Schwarzanegger (however the you spell his re ed name) has declared a state of emergency but, "Theres no reason for alarm"

I mean, seriously, you take tamaflu shot and its done.

BTW, people die from the flu all the time, what makes this flu any different?

Christ, why must the media and everyone else make every little thing into a panic?

Well, 158 people have died in Mexico from this, and as many as 100 million people have died from a single worldwide flu pandemic in the past. There is a lot of uncertainty about how virulent this strain is since swine flu usually doesn't spread among humans. Caution but not panic is the way to go for now.

Most influenza related deaths typically afflict the infant and elderly populations... this strain can kill people of any age group...

We have no natural immunity to this strain? Whereas you might harbor some immunity against seasonal influenza bouts.

+1. And Tamiflu doesn't prevent infection, it limits the damage once you get infected. There's simply not enough available if this thing spreads wildly.

Unfortunately I can work from home.

If that holds true, that would be the main reason to be concerned. The pandemic of 1918 that killed millions, for instance, turned healthy and developed immune systems against their hosts and killed victims outside the usual flu death profile.

The best news so far is that the cases reported outside of Mexico have been relatively mild.

True but like most viruses it weakens as it is passed from host to host, and becomes easier to manage if you can escape the initial onslaught!

If that could happen before next weekend to get me out of my calculus and genetics finals, I'd be all for it!
