I would be sad to see Ellis go. He's been a great guy since he's been in Dallas. However, this is a business, and the Cowboys have to do what they feel is best for the team. Not only now, but in the long run.

The Dallas Morning News reports the Cowboys are considering trading or releasing OLB Greg Ellis. The Cowboys would free up more than $5 million in salary cap room in 2009 with a trade. If they cut Ellis, they would save $4.15 million because he has a $1.5 million guarantee that was added to his contract in 2007. "He's looking forward to being a Dallas Cowboy," Ellis' agent, James Williams, said. "Now, if that's going to happen, we don't know. That's not in our control." Williams said he has not asked for or been told by the Cowboys that he could seek a trade partner. The Cowboys drafted Texas Tech OLB Brandon Williams, who led the Big 12 in sacks, and Oregon State OLB Victor Butler, who was second in the Pac-10 in sacks, in last month's draft. OLB Anthony Spencer, the Cowboys' No. 1 pick in 2007, is expected to start opposite OLB DeMarcus Ware. Ellis, however, worked with the first-team defense during Tuesday's OTA workout that was open to the media. A first-round pick in 1998, Ellis has 77 sacks in his career with 634 tackles. Ellis, who turns 34 in August, moved to outside linebacker in 2006 when the Cowboys changed to the 3-4 scheme after spending eight years at defensive end in the 4-3 alignment. The Star Telegram adds Ellis was sent home from OTAs on Thursday and has been put on the trading block, according to multiple sources.

Yeah but does he have much value left? Not sure what they could get for him.
Yeah..I would hate to see him go...he's a monster...but I think we could get a little something for him. But knowing the Cowboys, he'll probably just be released if anything.

yeah...never understood that though..at least get something. Unless they just don't want to embarass him by picking up only a 5th rounder or something
I don't get it either. Even if they are offering a 5th rounder, it's something. It's way better than releasing him, and get nothing in return. Just like the TO situation, although it's a little more complicated than that. But if you want to get rid of someone, test the market first.
Off the field yea, but with the media he was a big giant . But unlike T.O., he gets a pass and is remembered as "a great guy". I'm glad to see him go, time to see what the young guys can do finally.

Oh noes, he wasn't nice to the Dallas media.Ellis had three controversies around him in ten years with the Cowboys. Not really a comparison to Owens.
Actually he was great with the media, not sure how that info about him being a bag towards them got out.
He complained about his contract a couple of times, and he publicly worried when Parcells came in and announced he was switching to a 3-4. That said, he's given me plenty of reasons to be glad the Cowboys drafted him instead of Randy Moss over the last ten years.
Owens and Ellis saves Jones 15 million. I think the new stadium and all that money he is losing because of the economy is why they let Owens go and soon to be Ellis.
ROCKY FREEMAN FREEPORT, FL: I think Greg Ellis has been a great player, and probably still is, but I am not so sure he isn't in the "bad at ude" group that needs to move on in their careers. His self-centeredness has to carry over to other players, as he is the player's union rep. I'd hate to see his talent go, and I wish him the best, but I think we'll still do well and probably get better by getting younger, hungrier guys with better at udes in the mix.
Josh: Fair enough, I can see how you might have that opinion. To me, though, Ellis' leadership among the young players on the team has been invaluable over the years. I don't really think his gripes with management have had any effect on the locker room, because players tend to keep their heads down on the issue of someone else's money. I don't think Ellis' "at ude" has been so bad this off-season, but the Cowboys evidently feel the time has come to move on without him.
Nick: I think Greg just has a hard time realizing that he's not the same guy anymore. His production doesn't exactly meet his contract and that's what happens. It happened to guys much better than he is. Aikman, Emmitt, Deion . . . they were all cut. And most of them go play for another team like Greg probably will. But at this stage, it's about business and Greg should realize that. I think he does. It's just a hard deal all the way around.
Rob: Ellis has seemed concerned about his job security for years now, but Jerry Jones said the team's reasoning is a combination of things. Maybe that's a factor, but the biggest reasons I see are his age (going on 34) and Anthony Spencer. They believe it's Spencer's time, and if you've noticed, the Cowboys are getting younger at several positions (see: cornerback and wide receiver). Say what you want about Ellis -- he's an admitted worry-wart -- but his defensive teammates think the world of him. That leadership will be missed.

It's more to the fact that the Cowboys are getting younger. If you've noticed the trend has being going on for awhile. Spencer is 25 years old, Ellis turns 34 in August. It also is about money, Spencer is getting paid $4 million, there's no point in paying a bench player that much. A trade would help the Cowboys out financially, but since Jones publicly announced that Ellis won't be back with the Cowboys next year, I doubt that they will find a trade partner."I have a tremendous amount of respect for Greg," Jones said. "We've certainly had our differences from time to time, certainly on the business end of this. That goes with the Cowboys - that's not inordinate at all. There is always business you need to get ironed out. We have a very good relationship. Ultimately, we need to do what's best for him and certainly the Cowboys."
