8.2...that's a huge quake. Damn. Hopefully people will be running for the hills this time, instead of running out to get fish from the pre-tsunami water withdrawal.
They've upped the quake estimate to an 8.7. Kuala Lumpur is being evacuated.![]()
Dang...The strongest one I've felt was Whittier's earthquake that was a 5.9 back in 1987. That was one were I was wondering if I should get under my desk. But 8.7??? Man.
Aftershock?
Tsunami.
Dude, I feel so bad for those people. It's ed.
Was there a tsunami with this one?
BTW, an 8.7 is strong as , but still much weaker than the one that was felt before. The magnitudes go up exponentionaly, so even a small difference numericly will mean a huge difference in strength.
9 is ten times the strength of 8.
So, there has been one generated, but I think it's heading away from land.Meanwhile, a tidal gauge has detected a small tsunami in the Indian Ocean several hundred miles southwest of the earthquake.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that an instrument near the Cocos Islands recorded the passing wave, but the magnitude of the "small" tsunami was not clear.
The agency said no major tsunami has been observed near epicenter of the earthquake which was upgraded from a magnitude of 8.2 to 8.7. An aftershock measuring 6.0 struck 30 minutes after the initial quake.
Good. Those poor people have suffered too much.
Well, the Sri Lanka coast isn't out of the woods yet, and technicly neither are the others.
I think that part of the world can't rest untill tomorrow at the earliest
