Wow man sounds exciting!
Is there any way you can do pictures, and video?
Can you twitter your progress so I can keep up to date with everything?
Will there be a Facebook with pics of the install?
I'll be installing Windows 7 Release Candidate on my laptop this Thursday. I'm going to time everything to see exactly how well the install goes and how the boot up times are, and I'll be using my desktop to docu-post the procedure.
I'll use this thread to keep everyone up to date on features. If you haven't installed it yet, you can also ask questions about the new OS and I'll try to answer them for you.![]()

i'm taking the plunge too... not to install that worthless OS.
Microsoft doesn't have such a good reputation with their "finished" products on release, so I wouldn't be too eager to throw a glorified beta on my system yet.
vista sp2 is out or some ive read
It works perfectly, if you can take my word for it. It's much less of a hassle to disable the uac/firewall bs. All my torrent/newsgroup/steam works perfectly. Redone taskbar is acutally useful, and the GUI is pretty responsive. As long as they don't overprice it it should be a huge success.
Wow, congrats for figuring out how to click on a thread you don't want to read about.
Now, kindly exercise the intelligence not to check on this post again? Thanks. Some people might actually be interested in an OS that they haven't installed yet and are a little apprehensive about using.
A friend of mine is the head sys admin for a large hospital and has it running on three of his computers. I have also heard reports that the -beta- (not the RC) was already superior to Vista.
We'll see. I expect my laptop to fly with 7.
So wtf was Vista? A bump in the road like windows ME was?
I thought that these should be release fairly far apart but I really don't follow OS's as long as I can see email/Spurstalk/Porn I don't care what I'm using really.
Can I get a small run on what makes this better then Vista and XP since that's what my laptop/pc have.
Depends on what you're running.
I have Vista on my desktop and probably won't be making the switch to 7 for some time, because my main PC is beefy enough that it has no problem with it (quad core proc, 4 gigs of ram, 1.25 terabytes of storage). My laptop is pretty fast for the day I got it (late 2006), it has a 1.83 ghz core duo 2, 2 gigs of RAM, 100 GB hard drive, and I would be hesitant to install Vista on it.
Right now, I need to clean house on my laptop, of sorts, and installing 7 is probably going to give a huge performance boost. Plus I'd like to try the new OS out, so it makes sense.
I've been the running the last beta release before RC1 for some time. I think you'll be impressed when compared to Vista. I have a laptop with similar specs (1.83Ghz, 3GB Ram, 100GB) and I might have already mentioned that I gained almost an hour of battery life when compared to Vista. It's a pretty smooth OS, for Windows standards.
BTW, screw your desktop computer. I haven't upgraded my desktop since '05 - I still have an Athlon XP 2500+ (OC's to 3200+) with 1 GB of RAM and 80GB of space. Oh and a Radeon 9600 Pro!
I'm curious if they added anything in terms of DRM bs...
I don't know what they did to XP, but p2p programs don't work as well as they used to (ie on my previous Win2k machine).
It was nice knowing you.
my desktop is similar to yours - 6GB RAM, but only dual core processors, about the same HDD space, and i still have an 8800GT. You should install it imo. tf2 runs noticeably smoother for me, i was pleasantly surprised.
I'm also rocking a Radeon 4870.
Gonna have to hold off on the installation a day or two. Had a looooong day yesterday.
Here we go....
First mistake already. I burned the Windows 7 DVD to a data file and forgot to change the file settings to .ISO. =\

UGH. Horrible mistake to use Nero for burning. 2.5 GB install file and it wouldn't burn to an ISO because the windows install file was over 2 gigs! Freaking worthless software.
Wow, Windows 7 literally formatted my hard drive and installed in 20 minutes.
Installing firefox now. Total time to make the switch (once I actually got the DVD burned) is about 40 minutes. Pretty impressive.
Hmmm, one noticeable detail is that my video card drivers are blank. So my laptop's display rez is 1920x1200, but it started in 1067x768. Looks pretty awful!
Downloading flash, Nvidia 7900 Go GS drivers, and some firefox extensions.
Okay let's do a timed startup.
1:05 seconds while installing a driver. That's pretty damned impressive. Pre-format and installation of Windows 7 the boot time was well over 3 minutes.
I still have annoying problems with XP.
Here is the problem with microsoft. Their first iterations of the windows API were so crappy that they refuse to make the new ones backwards compatible.
In other words, I image that like vista, windows 7 will require you to bend-over backwards to install anything considered "old" now-a-days. As a pathetic example, I had an easier time getting diablo II to run on WINE under Linux than I did under vista. I can't even get games like sanitarium and master of orion 2 to install because microsoft's 16-bit emulation subsystem is a piece of total crap and I'm forced to use virtual PC with windows 98.
Couple this with the fact that movie and music companies bribed microsoft with money to include drm systems and I have an easier time running windows programs and burned movies under wine on ubuntu than on vista or sometimes XP!
I dunno if you live in the past like I do, but I would love you to see if old games (16-bit win 98 era) install and run on windows 7. If they don't, ill be using windows XP for a very long time.
so is it possible I could see performance boosts out of both my computers that are running XP at the moment? What version of drivers would I use?
the only drivers 7 didn't have for my rig were Razer Barracuda drivers, and i just used the 64 bit Vista drivers and it works great.
in terms of DRM stuff, is win7 worse, better, or no change - compared to XP ?
i LOVE old games. but my love for old games goes farther back than yours even. like I love the old Apogee games, like Wolfenstein 3D, Spear of Destiny, Commander Keen, Major Stryker... I grew up on those. Thanks to DOSbox, I havent had a hard time playing them in Vista. In fact, I'm about to start a thread on them.
