Topless coffee shop a hit in small Maine town

Owner says high number of applicants a reflection of tough job market

Staff hired on basis of friendliness and willingness to "treat everyone equally"

"People leave here happy and can't wait to come back," owner says

    From Laurie Segall
    CNN
(CNN) -- It's a tough time for businesses, but one entrepreneur may have found the recipe for success.

On Monday, Donald Crabtree opened Grand View Topless Coffee Shop in Vassalboro, Maine, where the waiters and waitresses serve their customers topless.

In a town with fewer than 4,500 residents, the topless coffee shop is booming with business. Paul Crabtree, the owner's brother, describes business so far as "fantastic."

"It's just been crowds mobbing in," he said.

Donald Crabtree faced initial opposition to his plan, but he won the right to go ahead in a planning board hearing last week. Many local residents were irate over the idea of combining coffee and nudity. Crabtree, however, saw a profitable business venture.

"I know what people want," he said. "People like nudity, and coffee is profitable. Sure, I'd start a coffee shop, but I'd be out of work in a week."

The flood of job applications -- more than 150 -- for Grand View Topless Coffee Shop reflected the rough job market.

Crabtree hired 10 women and five men under stringent requirements, including friendliness and, what he considered most important, that the wait staff "treat everyone equally." Watch townspeople, employees talk about coffee shop

"We didn't hire '10s,' " he said, referring to appearance. "We hired everyone from skinny to big-boned women."

Of the 15 selected, most had been laid off from other jobs in the past few months.

Elvis Thompson of Brunswick, for example, was a line cook at a restaurant before he lost his job. "They couldn't afford me anymore," he said.

He said he doesn't mind fielding interesting requests from customers.

"An 80-year-old woman told me she wanted to see me in spandex," Thompson said. "I just feel really lucky to have a job. I need the money so I can pay my rent."

Ginni Labree from Palermo, Maine, said she applied to several restaurants before being hired at the Grand View. All the restaurants declined to hire her because of her lack of experience.

"I'm so excited, so excited to have a job," she said.

The coffee shop jobs are paying off. One waitress received a $100 tip for a cup of coffee, and most of the wait staff make about $30 a table.

Although the topless coffee shop has been open less than a week, Crabtree said he is already seeing regulars. Customers include a variety of individuals, but mainly couples and females.

He also sees his new business venture as a temporary fix for customers struggling through tough economic times.

"The economy is so bad," Crabtree said, "Everyone's losing their homes, their ties, everything they own. People leave here happy and can't wait to come back. It's nice to see people smile again."

Topless coffee shop burns down; official says it was arson

(CNN) -- In the end, a coffee shop in Vassalboro, Maine, that gained national attention for its topless waiters and waitresses simply proved too hot -- the Grand View Topless Coffee Shop burned to the ground early Wednesday morning.

The building of the topless coffee shop was completely destroyed by a fire Wednesday morning.

A state fire official said it was arson.

The blaze consumed the risque, small-town business shortly after midnight, said Vassalboro Fire Chief Eric Rowe. He described the flames as "severe" and said the building was a "total loss."

"I really liked it here," waitress Krista Macentyre said after learning the cause of the fire. "We weren't hurting anyone. I don't know why someone would do something like this."

The shop's proprietor, Donald Crabtree, said he is determined to rebuild. "This is home" to a lot of people, he said.

For Crabtree the coffee shop literally was home. He and his two daughters, their two boyfriends, and his two infant grandchildren lived in quarters attached to the Grand View. The fire forced them to relocate to a motel.

Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety, called it arson and said "evidence has been taken to the state police crime for lab analysis."

An ambulance crew returning to Belfast, Maine, noticed the fire around 1 a.m., waking Crabtree and six others, including two 4-month-old infants, according to McCausland.

Crabtree said he did not have insurance for the Grand View. If necessary, he said, he would be willing to reopen in a temporary mobile trailer on the site of the topless -- and now roofless -- coffee shop.

Crabtree said his 10 female and three male employees are "in shock."

While some Vassalboro residents expressed displeasure with the 18-and-over establishment, Crabtree said he had received no threats.

In a February interview with CNN shortly after Grand View opened, Crabtree said the coffee shop was doing brisk business in the small town of 4,500. "It's just been crowds mobbing in," he said at the time.

"This place was made to put smiles on people's faces," he said Wednesday.

Waitress Macentyre added, "This was a good innocent business."

"Every worker was just trying to take care of themselves and make a living -- just trying to live like everybody else," she said.

I wonder if they served coffee in different cup sizes. I'd ask for a D cup and a squirt of milk.

Grandview Topless Coffee Shop burns down

UPDATE: The Boston Herald says it was arson:
It appears at least one person felt a topless coffee shop in Maine was too hot. Fire officials say a blaze that destroyed the Grand View Topless Coffee Shop in Vassalboro at about 1 a.m. today was set by an arsonist.
Donald Crabtree thought a topless coffee and doughnut store was just the way for a merchant to fight the recession, so he opened the Grandview Topless Coffee Shop in Vassalboro, Maine, a few months ago. The place drew legions, but last night it burned down, according to the Boston Globe.
No word yet on suspected arson, but apparently not all the good Mainers were happy about the Grandview's dress code. Last month a state trooper was called to the Grandview after one of the waitresses went outside in her uniform, according to AP. The Vassalboro town fathers/mothers are scheduled to vote on an ordinance regulating topless restaurants on Monday.

bleh... what a bunch of reactive . hopefully they rebuild soon so that if Vassalboro bans them it'll fall under ex post facto.
