Ok...we had a par ion on the desktop computer where we had a C: and a D:. All of our programs were being saved on the d drive. Recently, the par ion was removed because of some technical mumbo jumbo, and all the d programs were put on the c drive. They're all technically still there, but now none of them work.

I've tried to re-download ITunes, and it downloads fine. But, when I try to install it, it give me an error message that says 'invalid drive d:' I guess it's still trying to install it on the d drive, which isn't there anymore. How do I change it to where it will install it on the c drive, and forget the d ever even existed?

Have you tried uninstalling it first? You may not be able to uninstall it since the original par ion has been changed.

Try uninstalling it, either by finding the uninstall icon shortcut from the start menu, or by directly going to the Itunes directory and running the uninstall.exe from there.

If both of those fail, you can try this last idea. You will have to know how to edit your windows registry though. WARNING!!! You can really mess your computer up by editing your registry. Make a backup copy first!!!

    Delete your Itunes folder.

Type regedit in the Run dialogue box.

Delete any mentions of Itunes from your registry.

    Look under HKEY_CURRENT_USER / SOFTWARE

    and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SOFTWARE

You can search through the entire registry by pressing ctrl F.

I hate windows. In Linux I don't have to worry about a stupid registry... just cd to ~/bin and delete whatever program I don't want, and delete any libs it has in ~/lib

It won't let me uninstall, because I'm getting the same message. I don't want to try the registry thing just yet, because of the possible repercussions.

It's the registry. You can screw around with everything else, but utimately, the registry is looking for the program on a drive that no longer exists.

What I told you is pretty safe if you back up the registry first. Otherwise you can take it in to a fix-it shop.

Call this guy Mark 287-0465. He'll either tell you how to fix it, or you can bring it to him and he'll charge you to fix (he doesn't charge that much). He's located near 281 and Donella.

Tell him that I referred you.

Without going into the registry to make the necessary changes, which can be scary for novices, you could repar ion your HD to have a D: par ion again by simply using FDisk or a par ion program like Par ion Magic.

But he would still have to see what the directory setup was and copy it exactly as before. Hearing about this trouble with ITunes makes me really want to stay away from it now.

ITunes has been completely great for me before the par ion was removed. It's a really good, user friendly program, and I'd never had any problems with it. By far the best audio program I'd used.

The problems just started with the removal of the par ion. There are a few other programs it does it with, too.

If you're talking about something else, then carry on..

Moral of the story: don't F with par ions on a Win-do'hs machine.

You could make a backup of the registry, as stated earlier. It's really not that scary to edit. I think that if you target just one program to fix at a time, you would be OK. What's the worst that would happen? ITunes wouldn't work? It's not working now!

Uh, my free music that I can access at anytime because I don't have to use a specific program. And it doesn't matter how many par ions come and go, I can always play my music.

If I were to actualy sign up for a pay service, I wouldn't want to have such limitations.

I've never tried ITunes, but I'm sure there has to be a way to change the save location.

you should have uninstalled all your programs before you started changing your Par ions around. You said ALL your programs were not working right. If you have the restore disk you could backup what data you want then start over. OR WHY Not make a Par ion drive d and move what you had there before.

    by the way Itunes rules

I have a question about Itunes. My husband has an Ipod and downloads a lot of tunes from Itunes. Now my daughter just got an Ipod. He told her that the songs she gets from itunes she has to pay for. She can't get them from him even though he has already paid for them. Apparently the .99 cents per song is only good for each particular ipod. I think that sucks that you should have to pay for the same song more than once in the same household. Is this correct?

I'm not sure, but he should be able to upload them to his hard drive and she can copy them from there.

My husband downloads to his computer than copies it to his ipod.

He does upload them, but the ones from itunes apparently are regisitered to a particular ipod. By serial number or something, I guess. Damn proprietary hitech crap.

I hope so because I wouldn't mind getting one of the ipod minis but not if I have to pay all over for the same songs. For now I'll just stick with my little mp3 player that only holds 34 songs.
