What's the best, and safest, free 'word' type site to use?

I just need basic do ent stuff, nothing fancy.

    Is OpenOffice.org good?

    Thanks.

    OpenOffice is good

Just make sure to save your files as " .doc ", if you are going to open them on another PC that has MS Office

openoffice is great... abiword is free too, plus google docs which you can use directly through your browser though i'd rather have software like the other two mentioned.

Open Office is pretty much the same as Word, except it's free.

As lefty said, when you save files, you will Save As MS Word file...

then when you open the file on another computer with Word, or email it to someone with Word, it will open fine.

OO is pretty full-featured and a big program (like Word). If you just want basic stuff, maybe something else is better.

What do you mean by "site"? Are you looking for an online word processor, or one to download and install? OpenOffice is a good office suite to install, and being free, you have nothing to lose by trying it. I find it a bit slow in certain areas, but stable and complete (in my limited use, at least).

Please reply if you like it or not. A friend needs word for school and I was thinking this may be the answer.
