I am not a religious person, but that is a great example of the positive power of the values that can arise out of religious instruction (if you look closely, most positive values are common to the teachings of all the major religions, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism certainly).
In a globalised society that has lost its way in greed and selfishness, replacing values like perseverence, loyalty, sacrifice and compassion with the values of the market system - quicker, easier, cheaper - we would all do well to pay heed to stories like this and remember that teaching kids a decent set of values is as important as the three Rs.
