The Chanifesto: Rockets’ hopes flare out fast
    By Lorne Chan - Express-News

Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey was in Orlando at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, standing at the front door of a player who averaged 3.8 points last season.

In the first minute of the free-agency period, Morey began his pitch to woo Magic backup center Marcin Gortat.

Morey's Facebook and Twitter pages, along with the Rockets' team Web site, have messages asking fans to send in their recruitment pitches for Gortat, who averaged 12.6 minutes a game as Dwight Howard's backup last season.

It's an approach that would seem more fitting if Morey were looking for a prom date rather than a post player, but there's nothing wrong with his desperation. Not when the Rockets are having the NBA's worst offseason.

Since taking the eventual NBA champion Lakers to a seventh game in a second-round playoff series, the Rockets' fortunes have fallen like South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford's dignity.

Rockets team physician Tom Clanton said Monday that Yao Ming's left-foot injury may force him to miss all of next season and could be career-threatening.

Thursday, forward Ron Artest knocked the Rockets down again by agreeing to a deal with the Lakers. Artest had said he wanted to stay in Houston, but Kobe Bryant is probably a little more persuasive than an MIT grad-turned-general manager knocking on your door after midnight.

The team also hasn't been able to trade Tracy McGrady, who may not be back until spring after undergoing microfracture surgery.

If Gortat doesn't sign with the Rockets, Morey might wind up standing on Gortat's lawn holding a boom box above his head with

    Peter Gabriel playing.

Morey said more than 2,000 e-mails to Gortat from Rockets fans had come in by noon Wednesday, although some of those came from Nigerian princes needing a valid Social Security number.

Turns out Morey's heart might get broken. Dallas made Gortat an offer Thursday that the Rockets won't match.

This week's events have sent Rockets fans in a full online panic between e-mailing Gortat and following Artest's free agency.

Artest, never looking for attention, posted to his Twitter page Wednesday, “THANKS ALOT HOUSTON. I HAD ALOT OF FUN.”

He continued to post from his cell phone to his Twitter on Thursday, with messages saying he had signed with the Denver Nuggets, the closed-down company

Circuit City, the defunct-since-1957 Brooklyn Dodgers and the defunct-since-Isiah Thomas New York Knicks.

At least he wasn't typing in the messages while driving, Sergio Kindle.

Artest ended up choosing the Lakers, texting the news to the media. On Twitter, where death hoaxes are spread on a daily basis — did you hear about Jeff Goldblum? — the death of the Rockets' lineup turned out to be true.

Now, none of their big three of Yao, McGrady and Artest is back or healthy. At least they saved face and picked up Trevor Ariza.

It might even be a better idea at this point to look past the 2009-10 season to the star-packed free agency summer of 2010.

Morey will be there at 12:01 a.m., standing at the front door of his next crush.

Nightmare offseason! We still got Morey though and he is pretty good, so I am not too worried. We might be in the lottery in 09 and even 10, but we have a lot of good pieces to get back in the mix relatively soon.

its a shame, they have a terrific coach. he really maximizes his players potential. if it only werent for injuries.. but it happened. not we're left to wonder and imagine

trading tmac isnt totally out of the equation, they could always go for draft picks which would coincide well with rebuilding. plus, scola and ariza are still young. we gotta wish our texas brothers well
