It's been a great offseason so far. One that ensures that the Spurs will contend for a le, but here is a thought for some icing on the cake.

With the salary cap room that the OKC Thunder has, have Presti sign Odom to a contract for around $6.5/7.0 million per year, then trade Odom to us for Bonner, Finley and Williams and a 2nd round pick.

This gives the Thunder 3 expiring contracts to possibly land a person they want during the season when teams will try to trade to create more cap space and it gives us possibly the best 1 thru 10 ever assembled on one team.

The $6.5/$7.0 is more than any other team can offer, except Portland, and may be enough for the Lakers not to match.

    Jefferson can play the 2,3,4
    Odom the 3,4,5

    Starting Lineup

    Parker
    Jefferson
    Odom
    McDyess
    Duncan

    Bench

    Ginobili
    Hill
    Mason
    Blair
    Haislip
    McClinton
    Hairiston

Odom'll demand a lot more money than that. And the Lakers will still be able to match any offer throw at him.

that would be insane.....and I am sure Stern would do everything possible to stymy such an occurance. Also, no way does Odom leave LA.

It would be absolutely sweet if it happened though. I will go one step further and say that Milwaukee cuts Bowen and we re-sign him to a 1 yr deal and allow him to retire a Spur.

BTW....McDyess would come off the bench.

    C - Duncan, Mahimni, Haislip
    PF - Odom, McDyess, Blair
    SF - Jefferson, Bowen, Gist
    SG - Mason, Manu, Hairston
    PG - Parker, Hill, McClinton

This lineup would be insane with Championship possibilities.....

Sign a player for the LLE to include in the trade, which would bring Odom's salary to $9.0 million. Lakers would then be $ 23 million over the lux tax threshold if they matched.

Why would Presti do this? On the off chance he could make a trade using those expiring contracts? Even for next summer it's a crap shoot. And he's not an idiot.

I doubt they care as long as they get Odom back..

Odom has already been reported as asking for 10mil.

A scenario like that would never play out anyway - blatant collusion is verboten.

He will likely want more than that, but he won't get more than that. It is just the way money works. Everyone is short on it this year with the exception of the Blazers, Pistons, Raptors and Thunder.

I see this deal as highly unlikely. I would love for it to happen, but chances are it won't.
I really don't know what the Blazers are waiting to go hard after Odom, they need a 3 and they'll be devitalizing a direct rival.

Why would the Laker be free to match any offer???

The deal is not all that unrealistic, it is just unlikely to happen. Plus the Spurs don't want to take on too many big contracts to win now and regret it later. We still have to re-sign Parker and hopefully Manu.
i think its unrealistic because theres no motivation for OKC. they dont need vets, if we give them another first round maybe. further, odom is not looking for 7 million, if he was, the lakers resign him easily. he wants 10+. this move would require the lakers to agree as well. you cannot sign someone and trade them right away unless it is a sign and trade. so the lakers would need to get something in return.

They can match it, but Odom is an unrestricted free agent. Meaning he can sign where ever he wants. So if the Spurs/Thunder do pull this off for 7 million a year and the Lakers match that offer, Odom still has the option to sign with the Spurs/Thunder.
What I'm trying to say is that: at equal amount of money the most probable scenario will be Odom picking LA.

I think what he's saying is that the Lakers are waiting for him to get another offer on the open market, and then they'll match dollars. Odom's not restricted, but coming off the championship, all other things like money being equal, he'd go back to LA.

Y'Know, I'd just be ing happy if Presti decided to opt out of the remaining FA market this summer, take our junk contracts with their cap room and send us nothing but a big fat trade exception. They can try again next summer.

Your idea is impossible on a number of different levels. Still, it forced me to take a peek at Oklahomaīs payroll, and found myself amazed at their possibilities:

So in essence, theyīve got 4 great prospects (Westbrook, Harden, Durant and Green) with one of those being franchise calibre, all of which are really young yet not too raw, athletic, intelligent, team oriented and well adjusted individuals, without serious injury concerns and low bust potential, and unlike other rebuilding teams of recent (Hawks, Blazers, Bulls) that stockpiled talent thus creating logjams at a certain position, they actually make sense together. Plus they also have a few interesting players around them in Krstic and Sefolosha that they could use in the future.

But in addition to it and what impresses me the most, they also have tremendous cap flexibility without any long term ties other than rookie scale deals or a couple other cheap contracts that donīt run for more than two years. So in light of their projected 20 to 30 million available for use in one of the deepest FA classes to memory in 2010 (enough to pursue a franchise calibre player plus enough help around), and provided they win something like 35-40 games this season and thus position themselves as a reality in the near future, they should be in good position to persuade a franchise calibre player to join them. That, coupled with the projected growth of their young nucleus, should make them contenders a year or two after that. And for God knows how long.

Donīt get me wrong, itīs not like I just found out today their draft picks and roster and had an epiphany, but when you look not every isolated move but the whole picture, damn it hits you what a masterful job Presti has done so far. And yes, I realize that not everything may pan out, but still you just about canīt picture a better situation for a franchise than the one they are looking at. Iīve got to admit, I canīt help but to feel a bit envious and bitter that we lost him.
