How much did it cost you? I only have the 120 elite HD.
Just wondering, having a 750GB drive hooked up to my 360 which is hooked up to my HDTV is one of my favorite technology combos.
The only problem is that my 750 is full, I'll probably sell it and buy a 1.5 TB drive.

It's just a regular external hard drive, I got it for like 75.00 which at the time was a steal.
Is there a way you can play the Media (i.e. Avi's) on the 360 with that? or can you do it through Media Center?
there are ways around it but they arent supposed to happen. M$ doesnt want you storing media they want you to get it from them in the marketplace
That's totally not true, the 360 is designed to playback a lot of different types of files including WMV's and Divx/Xvid.
WMV is probably the best option because it supports the highest bitrate (Up to 15Mbps) and resolution (1920x1080) and supports 5.1 surround sound.

So to answer your question Mike: Yes you can playback media files (Not every type but quite a few) directly from a removable drive, including for example high def movies.
is that cheaper than a htpc setup?
I can't say, you'd have to do that math.
If you didn't have big plans to play a lot of games you could go for a used Arcade system (With HDMI) and the price of the drive depends on how large it is, how large it is would depend on what kind of files you want to put on it. For HD movies you can expect each movie to run around 9GB, a 750GB drive will hold around 70 movies.....

It would be since MKV's are the most common type of HD video available, but playback of WMV's is certainly sufficient, my biggest problem obviously isn't file availability, it's hard drive space limitations.
I suck with HD's and like this. But how do I set up an external HD?
If your files are less than 4GB you just format it FAT32. If your files are more than 4GB you have to format it as a MAC disk using something like MacDrive, which can be found in various locations.

Not anymore. Most hard drives today are using the NTFS (which stands for Windows NT File System). Fat32 is almost completely gone from newer hard drives.
You CAN reformat to Fat 32, but it could cause compatibility issues if you still plan to use it with a computer.
I used to play WMV HD movies from my 360, but most of my HD movies are x264/mkv. Disappointed with the lack of compatibility with file formats on the 360, that's where PS3 is superior. My friend has this 1TB HD hooked up to his PS3 and plays all formats with ease.
As I said I have over 850GB of files so while there are more x264 and MKV files out there, there's certainly enough WMV's.
I should have figured they'd come NTFS, but any monkey can format a hard drive.

but for real I used to watch movies off the Zune all the time in that little ass format and I cant believe my re ed ass never thought to hook up an external to watch movies...wtf is wrong with me? Good . Its like a whole new xbox to me now....YESSSSSSSSSSS
you can play them from another drive but you can store it in there. you basically need 2 drives to play one vid or song. i want to store my stuff in the hardrive. that isnt so much to ask for?besides my flash drive can only handle 8 gb. at least with the ps3 you can easily store it there saving trouble
There are definitely still a lot of WMV-HD released still, but I'm not a fan of the compression. 720P movies are usually 8-9 gigs, when an MKV file is half of that. I guess it matters less the bigger the HD you have, but that's still a 2:1 ratio.
