At a time when Governor Perry and the Texas Legislature are working on ways to cut Texas property taxes, San Antonio City Council is expected to go on record later today as saying your property taxes are too low, 1200 WOAI news reported today.
Council is expected to recommend to the legislature creation of a so called "Urban Library District" which would have the authority to levy a brand new property tax.
"It would not necessarily mean a hike in taxes, but there is always the possibility that to get new library services, we might propose such a thing," John Nicholas, chairman of the board of the San Antonio Library Foundation, told 1200 WOAI news.
In addition to property taxes to fund the city, the county, and the school district, Bexar County homeowners are already nickel-and-dimed with property tax levies to support the Bexar County Hospital District, the Alamo Community College District, and various road and drainage districts. The "Urban Library District" which has been proposed in the legislature, would hold the same legal authority to levy and collect taxes, and to seize your property if you don't pay up.
"Creating the Urban Library District doesn't do anything about raising taxes," Nicholas said. "That would be a topic for future discussion."
Nicholas said 'just keeping the doors of the city's libraries open' is a major effort these days due to dwindling resources. The library system relies on property tax money taken from the city's general fund, fines and fees, and donations.
No New Taxes!!!
Anyone associated with the current city council needs to be flushed down the drain!!!!!!!!
