By John Whisler - Express-News World Extreme Cagefighting is coming to San Antonio.
The WEC, sister company of professional mixed martial arts goliath Ultimate Fighting Championship, plans to bring a 10-bout card to the AT&T Center on Oct. 10.
“We're very excited about it,” WEC general manager Reed Harris said. “We've been trying to come to San Antonio for a couple of years, but we never could find a date.”
The card will feature top-ranked contenders Donald Cerrone (10-1) and Ben Henderson (9-1) fighting for the interim lightweight le.
Originally scheduled for Wednesday in Youngstown, Ohio, the card was postponed after Henderson suffered an injury.
The WEC tried to reschedule it, but Harris said the Covelli Center in Youngstown was not available Oct. 10.
When the WEC began looking for an alternate site, Harris said San Antonio was one of the first cities that came up.
The main event and three undercard bouts will be televised live nationally on Versus beginning at 9 p.m.
Tickets for the event — priced at $25, $45, $75 and $125 — will go on sale Friday beginning at 10 a.m. at the AT&T Center box office, all Ticketmaster locations, or by phone at (800) 745-3000.
Tickets also are available online at ticketmaster.com or wec.tv.
I'll definetly be there
At least I won't have to fly to Dallas or Vegas. It should be decent enough, better than the local shows here. Those are still entertaining fights -- don't get me wrong.
Presale is today for those who are getting tickets: passcode TEXAS
I received mine in the mail yesterday.
Weigh-ins for "WEC 43: Cerrone vs. Henderson" take place next Friday, Oct. 9, at Cowboys Dancehall in San Antonio, Texas.
The event begins at 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT local time) and is free and open to the public. Doors open at 5 p.m. local time.
Following the weigh-ins, which are held on the eve of next Saturday's Versus-televised WEC 43 event, WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown, former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir and MMA pioneer Jens Pulver will host a Q&A session that is free and open to the public.
Those prices look sweet! My tix to the UFC in Portland cost $300 and I was in the 2nd deck!
125 for ringside. Of course, this is the WEC and not the UFC and no big names like Pulver or Urijah. Dallas was 425 or 450 for ringside. Don't even ask how much it was for UFC 100.
