I hate this decision. They should have made Culpepper the starter.
why is that? Because with Culpepper they'll go 4-12 instead of 2-14?
Because there's no need at all to just throw Stafford out there right now. They're not putting him in a position to be successful. First year HC, very suspect offensive line and one of the worst defenses I've ever seen ... not to mention the added pressure of now being 'The Man' to resurrect them from a 0-16 season.
I'd be happier if they kept Stafford on the bench, and then if things went as badly as they probably will, he can be brought in as the starter mid season. No pressure.
Now, if he struggles ... which he undoubtedly will ... he'll be more likely to have the fan base and local media calling for him to be benched after our first 3 or 4 games (all losses), perhaps shaking his confidence. Underclassman QB's usually take longer to get things than Seniors do. He'd be better served IMO to sit back, watch and learn before being thrust out there.
He's going to get killed behind this offensive line. I'd prefer to see the Lions improve the O-line next offseason, and then look at starting Stafford.
And I actually think Culpepper might be able to look like his former self. He's finally healthy and appears to be in great shape. I'd rather risk having him get sacked all season long than sacrificing the 'future' of the team.
Aren't you a Queef fan?
Yes, but living here in Michigan, I long ago adopted the Lions as my B team.
Sadly, that means last year, between 2 teams, I was only able to enjoy 2 victories!![]()
Fair enough, but my philosophy is "either you've got it your you don't". If you're not mentally tough enough to handle playing from Day 1, then I don't see how you ever gain that mental toughness.
I generally agree with that philosophy.
But no rookie ... or veteran even ... has had to lead a team that previously failed to get a single victory. I think the Lions are 15-49 in the last 4 seasons. The fans are soooo hungry for a succesful QB, that I'm afraid that his early struggles and failures will have them coming down tremendously hard on him. There's simply alot more being asked of him than most young QB's have to deal with.
But I like the kid, and do think he'll be able to deal with it. I just think it would have been smarter to slowly work him in.
If i was the lions front office, and committed to overpaying Stafford that much, i would want him to play every snap this season. They also were having trouble selling out the stadium, and starting Cullpepper wasnt going to help the situation. Atleast Stafford has some star power.
seriously matt ryan did good, but his line wasn't crap and he ended up having an all pro RB stafford lacks those
Yep, the Falcons got Sam Baker and Michael Turner to help protect Ryan.
I agree that from an organization standpoint, that having Stafford out there helps. Season tickets, jerseys, etc etc...
But that's not part of the priority list for the fans.
the Lions are about to embark upon a 19-0 Super Bowl season with MVP Matthew Stafford. Prepare yourselves for glory, Detroit.

Don't hate the decision, but would still prefer that they make Culpepper the starter for at least the first 4-6 games of the season, let Stafford have what would essentially be an extended training camp, but also get more familiar with not only the playbook but Schwartz's coaching style and Linehan's offensive play calling, while getting a front seat at the speed and schemes of NFL defenses going full speed.
I'm not worried about the kid getting rocked behind a weak offensive line. Week 1 or week 16, if he gets hit, he gets hit. He could get injured on a routine play where he's blocked well for. I'm not worried about the pressure of 0-16. If he's not tough enough to handle that kind of pressure, then he's simply not cut out for this and at least they'll know early on. But, I think you still give the kid a few weeks watching so he can get his bearings, watch a guy who's played multiple seasons in the NFL do it for a few games up, close, and personal. And, then give him the keys. Putting him in right away in week 1 on the road, and against a team that has a good chance at making the playoffs, with a first year head coach doesn't really give him a great chance to succeed. All the cir stances pointed to starting Culpepper at the very least this first game.
Again, don't hate the decision, but just would have preferred they had started Culpepper to start the season.
I like the decision. This team blows donkey balls anyway and CPep looked horrible trying to complete a pass over 15 yards.
I'm with mono in that you either have it or you don't. Sitting for a few weeks doesn't help the kid's development, IMO.
I like both Stafford and Sanchez this year....Ryan and Flacco V. 2.0
Sanchez is in a better situation, but Stafford has Megatron to throw too and Pettigrew should be a pretty good NFL TE. Of course Stafford dosn't have the Defense that Sanchez has. He'll take his bumps, but I think he'll be alright. Both of them.
Hey DLF, how long is Culpepper under contract for?
Im of the school sink or swim.
Its worked for McNabb and Manning and others.
All I say, Kevin smith better stay healthy and get lots of Fing touchdowns and yards.
Too bad the Lions don't play the Cowboys and too bad Jerry didn't put a screen on the bottom of the display. That way Stafford could see what he looks like on the ground after yet another knock down/sack. Only this would have been on the world's largest hi def screen. I bet it might look pretty cool, that is, unless you're Stafford.
If only...
