Seriously, who does the GOP have to run against Obama? Nobody!

Sarah Palin, but she may quit during the middle of the campaign.

Romney is another candidate but Mormons and their magic underwear won't make him as desirable as a Christian candidate.

The OP actually makes a good point. Republicans here talk about Obama's inevitable one term presidency. I don't think there's any star players in the Republican party in the on deck circle who can take Obama out. Not right now anyway.

...and at this point in 2005, Obama had exactly 7 months under his belt as a first term senator. Things happen quickly in politics.

That said, the Republican will probably clean up some 75+ year old Senator and roll him out there for battle (they like doing that, you know).

Agreed. The Republican party is still fractured, lacks a unified sense of iden y and has a major public perception problem of being nothing more than a group of angry white guys. A perception they only reinforce by going ape over things like Obama wanting to give a speech to school kids about education. They'll get back some seats in congress in 2010, but in terms of winning back the white house in 2012, well, they'll need a lot of things to come together for that to have any chance of happening.

Pawlenty seems like a pretty decent guy who doesn't rely on vitriol to get his point across. He's young, seemingly articulate, and not an ass hole.

"Pawlenty seems like a pretty decent guy who doesn't rely on vitriol to get his point across."

He plans to use the 10th Amendment to keep his state out of Magic Negro's health plan.

By Louisiana standards maybe. Heck, David Duke was considered charismatic enough to win the governorship (and he almost did). The guy almost made everyone forget he hates anyone with a drop of non-aryan blood in them.
