Just off I-10 on the southeast side of San Antonio at the Pine Street exit, it stands tall and inquiring. It's a piece of American history, a billboard asking, "Where's The Birth Certificate?"

The question's not for you, me or for oversize 12-year-olds trying out next year for Little League baseball.

It's directed at only one person — President Obama — and comes from the same conspiratorial hinterlands in which the Clintons murdered Vince Foster (after leaving a trail of bodies behind in Arkansas) and where President George W. Bush planned or allowed the 9-11 attacks.

More than a year ago someone not keen on an Obama presidency came up with this syllogism:

    1. Obama is the child of a black Kenyan father and white Kansas mother.

    2. Obama was born in Hawaii.

Therefore, Obama was born in Kenya and isn't an American citizen.

Thus was born the "birther" movement. This isn't to be confused with the "Bertha" movement of the 1920s in which all American women named Bertha had to prove that their name actually wasn't Dolores.

Nor should it be confused with the "Big Bertha" movement of the 1970s when golf clubs had to provide registration papers to prove they weren't tennis rackets.

The resemblance to the Bertha Butt that singer Joe Tex sung about has more to do with where the conspiracy comes from.

The "birthers" insist that because Obama wasn't born in the United States he's an illegitimate president with no cons utional authority. What makes the movement and the billboard off I-10 historic is that Obama is the only president, if not the only politician in the history of this country, whose birth certificate is an issue even for members of Congress who have expressed skepticism about his birthplace.

The billboard wasn't created by a couple of cows telling us to "eat more chikin," but by the online news site WorldNet Daily that has paid for similar billboards across the country.

The answer to the question, "Where's The Birth Certificate?" is "In Hawaii's Department of Health," which has repeatedly displayed the original birth certificate to news organizations. Last November, the state's health director, Dr. Chiyome Fukino, responding to the manufactured controversy, told the Honolulu Advertiser, "This has gotten ridiculous. There are plenty of other, important things to focus on, like the economy, taxes, energy."

You're not, repeat NOT a racist for disliking Obama and criticizing him and his policies. But if you're stubbornly denying the man the reality of his birth because you didn't vote for him, your fidelity to facts and electoral democracy can be questioned.

There are well-intended people who ask, "Well, why doesn't he just end this by releasing his birth certificate?"

Aside from the state of Hawaii vouching for the birth certificate, questions can also be asked of these people. Questions like, "Prove that's your child and not your neighbor's." Or, "Prove that you love your husband." Or, "Prove that you own your house. No not that deed, the real one."

There are some questions we'd never think of asking unless we're trying to cause trouble.

But for those not satisfied and who believe we have an illegitimate president, there's one thing you can do. Stand under the billboard at Pine, click your heels three times and chant, "There's no place like Hawaii. There's no place like Hawaii. There's no place ... "

July 28, 2009 Urban Word of the Day
A conspiracy theorist who believes that Barack Obama is ineligible for the Presidency of the United States, based on any number of claims related to his place of birth, birth certificate, favorite birthday, or whether or not he has heard the song Africa by Toto.
"Did you know that Barack Obama's parents concealed the location of his birth because they knew he would grow up to be President? What? Of course it makes sense, I'm a birther!"

    2. Birther
A racist sore loser who can't deal with having a black president so they make up absurd conspiracy theories about Barack Obama's birth certificate.

These nutjobs actually believe that there has been a conspiracy going back 48 years to fake Barack Obama's birth certificate. Apparently they had a crystal ball and knew that this black child (born in the days of segregation) would someday run for President.
Just ignore that racist nutjob foaming at the mouth. He's a right wing "birther" conspiracy nut.

    5. Birther

A knuckle dragging gutter culture warrior related to tea bagging citizens who don't want to pay taxes because they don't support our troops.

"Obama's parents were so smart they planned 50 years ago to have a baby on foreign land and get him elected into the White House so he can raise taxes to pay for our troops. It's true I am a tea bagging birther"
What were those tea bagging protesters complaining about again? Ohh yay they refuse to accept a black man as president and now have resorted to saying Obama can not be president cause he is an illegal alien. Sounds crazy? No I am just a tea bagging "birther."

    7. birther
someone who believes that someone with black skin can't possibly be a real american, and thus cannot legally serve as president.
I'm a proud birther: I think everybody whose skin is darker than mine should be deported... or forced to work in the service industry for other whites like myself.

Because it was started by nutcases like you with absolutely no evidence. To respond to it would give it more merit than it deserves.
