Just wondering what your thoughts are on the upcoming season regarding your team.

I just got back from ESPN.com to read the conversation about the 143 point game against the Kings. This guy wrote some pretty optimistic stuff.

143 big ones, man. That's what I love about the Phoenix Suns. That Run N Gun style that Coach Alvin Gentry got from Mike D'Antoni before D'Antoni went to New York. We'll probably drop like 165 on the Lakers, the Mavs, and the Spurs. And I wonder what the Suns fans would get if they score 140 or more. They scored 140 or more like fives times last season, including 154 on the road against Golden State. We're looking like a playoff caliber team right now.

I hope he was drunk because I think he posted some pretty re ed .

    What do you guys project?

Anywhere between 40-50 wins, a borderline playoff team that either barely misses the playoffs or gets a piping hot laid on them in the first round. This guy was probably joking, not too many people expect anything beyond first round this year.

I hope for his sake he was... or drunk because he was at the game and was there an extra hour because of all the free throws.

I don't have any doubt the Suns will make the playoffs this year. They seem enthused to be playing their old style again sans Shaq, and they actually have a decent bench. However, they're thin at the 4 and 5 spots, so if Amare goes down for any extended length of time, we're pretty much ed on getting a good seed.

I'm a little more optimistic then most of the Suns fans here, obviously, but I don't expect them to get past the 2nd round. I think we're good enough to compete with the Blazers, Jazz, Hornets, Rockets, and Nuggets. Spurs, Mavs, and Lakers are clearly superior.

I actually do agree with Xylus that the playoffs are pretty much a guarantee.

I am thinking that the playoffs for the Suns is highly probable since they are back to their fast paced style again.

A borderline 8th seed that will get crushed on the boards nightly and go down in history as one of the worst defensive teams ever to lace 'em up.

But they'll score, except when good teams dare them to score with the game on the line in the 4th qtr(at which point they'll be throwing up desperate bricks from 30 feet away.)

There's no way the greatest Pg of all time doesn't lead his team to a 1st seed and a 4 game trounce of the Lakers in the WCF on the way to a le.

They'll win a lot of games this season, I think. In the end, though, an inability to defend consistently and a complete lack of rebounding will doom our team. Amare is now our best rebounder, and we all know that he's the second coming of Rodman.

So you are expecting the Suns to win a first round matchup?

I'm expecting the Suns to make the playoffs. I think they might win in the first round if they get a decent seed and don't get matched up against the Spurs, Lakers, or Mavs. If they make it to the 2nd round, they won't get any farther.

I don't think a 2nd round berth is likely, let alone guaranteed.

Gotcha... I kinda confused myself with a couple posts. I thought you were implying they would barely make it i.e. 7th or 8th seed and that they would then get booted in the 2nd round... which would mean, barring injuries etc, they would be ousting the Lakers or Spurs.

They can finish as high as sixth or as low as ninth. My guess is they finish with 47-51 wins. They'll struggle against teams with size and/or intense rebounding, but have way more offensive potential than most, and, if they can utilize their perimeter length and athleticism by playing a swarming defense, they may be able to force enough turnovers/misses to compete with the top-10 teams in the League for a handful of games. Houston, New Orleans and Utah will all be worse to some extent, and I fully anticipate the Suns competing with New Orleans for the 7th spot.

    DOK actually says something witty.

They'll either surprise a lot of people by starting out strong, or be mediocre and trade Amare halfway through the season.

They'd rather shoot themselves in the head than give a Lottery pick to OKC in broad daylight. That's what this season is all about.

Well that and tryin' to keep from having to give Amare the 6/120.

Thats a good point. How long will Kerr wait before pulling the trigger on an Amare trade just so he doesnt have to face the media in the event OKC wins the lottery.

Its bizzare, isn't it? Kerr comes on the job saying the Suns need to get better at defense and rebounding then proceeds to trade away all of their decent defenders and rebounders. We went from Marion to Shaq to Channing freaking Frye.

He DID higher Terry Porter. Apparently he believes anyone who played for the Spurs is also good at coaching defense. Even if theyre not capable of putting two sentences together.

He won't have to, Kerr's gone once the season's over. If Sarver actually gives him a new contract he's even worse of an owner than I imagined.

Kerr is a puppet. Why would Sarver want to get rid of his puppet? Kerr not only traded away KT and two picks for nothing, he did it with a smile. He spun it, baby! The Suns would be good for years to come so dont worry about those picks!

The only way Kerr leaves is because he WANTS to quit. I'd say theres a 50/50 chance considering how much heat he's taking for making so many bad decisions.

I personally didn't keep up with happenings with the Suns other than Shaq leaving and the Goran Magic thread the other day so I didn't know they had traded all of 'em away. I didn't even know Channing Frye had made it to the Suns; he isn't known for his lockdown defense now that I think about it.

I just thought it was a funny quote; especially in light of yesterday's 140 pt game.

I don't think Kerr ever really wanted the job. He just did it as a lark for his friend Sarver thinking it'd be an easy clean. And it is. He GM's in a vacuum. There is no expose by the local Media. He shuttled back & forth to San Diego. Sarver lost close to a billion dollars in the Crash so he can't unload after taking near quarter billion in bad paper off Colangelo at the sale.

They only coerced Nash & Hill to come back to re the OKC situation, but, the contracts go on for two years after that event is decided.

    It's a mess.

I agree completely with the puppet thing, but Sarver knows he needs to save face with the fans if he wants any tickets sold once Nash and/or Amare is gone. For all the criticism Kerr faces, IMO the fans are just as bitter towards Sarver for hiring a completely unqualified GM who only got the job cause he and Sarver were drinking buddies.

Then again, Sarver and Kerr seem to not care about what the fans think. Kerr knows that a lot of fans are furious about the UA cronyism that went on when he was hired, so of course he goes out and signs an ex-UA player who has nothing to contribute and has had problems with every other team he's been on.
