Thanks Galileo. I'm quoting this in the Duncan Forum.
Too early. All stats are meaningless until at least 10 games.
I wish we had Brook Lopez next to Duncan. Oh well.
Blair also has a great PER right now but his minutes are too low for him to qualify.
PER doesn't mean much until the sample is bigger though.
It's great to see Tim leading but I agree.
Not in 1st, but near the top.
Last 3 years:
6th
6th
5th
they can give him the mvp now
only in America...
I hope he stays in top 5.
Good job Timmy! What old?![]()
I'm sold hand Timmy the League MVP right now..![]()
People said Shaq was done about 5 years ago. Could we end up having TD longer then any of us think?
TD will likely be able to play as long as Shaq.
The real question is: will he want to?
Bryant was 6-19 last night and stunk up the court. How is he possibly #2 ?
New leaders, same link, Kobe is out of the top 20:

btw - Duncan's rating went up without playing, how can that happen?
Is it a strength of opponent factor?
I agree. I honestly don't think Timmy would want to play that much longer even if he could still play. He just come across as to me as someone who gets bored easly, and by that time would probably be wanting to pursue other interests.
I'm convinced Duncan retires in 2012 no matter what happens with the team between now and then. I hope I'm wrong, I'd like to see him play forever, but I think he's done. I thought he was pretty clear about it in training camp.
It has nothing to do with his game, barring injury he could probably play for years. He wants to go out while his game is still strong. His family is young, he wants time with them. I think he's done with the grind of the schedule.
Duncan is not going to retire in 2012, barring serious injury.
* Duncan LOVES playing basketball.
* In 5 years, Duncan will still be all-star quality, given how few quality big men there are in the NBA.
* After 2012, Duncan will sign a new contract for lower money, freeing up salary cap space to keep the team good.
* The Spurs look to be a good team for another 5 years:
* TP is still a fairly young player, improving his shooting as he gradually slows down.
* Blair looks like all-star material for next season, and may be hall-of fame material.
* Mahimni might still develop, and get his contract picked up.
* Splitteri is going to be here eventually.
* Jefferson could re-sign for lower dough, he is only 29.
* Hill looks like a potential all-star.
* Bonner is still improving.
If the Spurs are still a good team, Tim will stay.
Because the PER calculation depends, in part, on calculating league-wide constants (like Pace) that change as teams play games. As the league-wide Pace number is recalculated on a daily basis, a player's PER is affected, whether he plays or not.
There are a variety of other factors that go into it; I don't think strength of schedule has anything to do with it, though.
Hope you're right Galileo. But I don't think it has anything to do with the team. It's a personal decision. And, yes, he loves playing and "gets up for pick-up games," but it sounds to me like he's already made the decision to move on. He wants to win, he wants another le, but whether that happens or not I don't think he'll continue with the grind of the schedule and his knees after this contract.
We'll have to wait and see what he does.
I'm going to split the difference between Duncan228 and Galileo. I think Tim will play three more years, and possibly a fourth year depending on how good the team is.
Yes, I think it will be a personal decision. Tim is a fiercely compe ive guy, but he's also from the Caribbean, so he understands quality of life and how important that is. If his knees are too far gone, he'll hang it up and never look back. He's a cerebral guy, so he knows he's had a great career, but he isn't an egotistical maniac who feels he has something to prove at this point.
I pray he gets a fifth ring, or even a sixth. Absolutely nobody is more deserving.
It will be a long, long time before this league sees another player - and person - like Tim Duncan. We are so fortunate to have him.
Nicely said. Duncan is one-of-a-kind, it's been a joy watching him play.
