The Daily News Published November 12, 2009
LA MARQUE — The owner of one of the world’s fastest production automobiles accidentally drove his fine-tuned, French-built car into a sal er lagoon Wednesday.

The man, who police said was from Lufkin, was uninjured after escaping the partially submerged Bugatti Veyron as it came to rest in about 2 feet of sal er.

The two-seater, with 16 cylinders and four turbo chargers, can reach speeds of more than 250 mph. New models sell for about $2 million.

The man, who refused to give his name, was looking at real estate in Galveston.

About 3 p.m. a low-flying pelican distracted him as he traveled north on Interstate 45 just south of the hurricane levee near Omega Bay.

The man jerked the wheel, dropped his cell phone, and the car’s front tire left the frontage road and entered a muddy patch, which foiled his attempt to maneuver away from the lagoon.

The Veyron’s powerful engine gurgled like an outboard motor for about 15 minutes before it died.

Police and firefighters blocked the frontage road until MCH Towing employee Gilbert Harrison carefully wenched the car away from riprap and onto the soft, muddy bank.

It’s the rarest car in the world, not something you can just replace, the man said.

An Associated Press story in October mentioned a 2006 model Veyron for sale in Jonesboro, Ark., with an asking price of $1.25 million.

One of the prospective buyers was from Texas.

That Bugatti Veyron was one of only 200 made and one of only about 15 in the United States, the AP reported.

What a lucky idiot. In only slightly different cir stances, he'd be dead.

A large number of drivers of the original Shelby Cobra never made it to their first payment. It was too much car for them, they wrecked, and they died. This was 35 years before the common use of the cell phone.

    Hang up and drive.

I have no pity or sympathy for a man who's driving a $2,000,000 sportscar and needs to talk on his cell phone while driving it. I guess driving a car that goes 250 mph isn't enough.

LA MARQUE, Texas – A man blamed a low-flying pelican and a dropped cell phone for his veering his million-dollar sports car off a road and into a salt marsh near Galveston. The accident happened about 3 p.m. Wednesday on the frontage road of Interstate 45 northbound in La Marque, about 35 miles southeast of Houston.

The Lufkin, Texas, man told of driving his luxury, French-built Bugatti Veyron when the bird distracted him, said La Marque police Lt. Greg Gilchrist. The motorist dropped his cell phone, reached to pick it up and veered off the road and into the salt marsh. The car was half-submerged in the brine about 20 feet from the road when police arrived.

Gilchrist said he doesn't know if the car was salvageable, but in his words, "Salt water isn't good for anything." He says the man, whose iden y hasn't been released, was not injured.

A 2006 Bugatti Veyron was recently offered for sale in Jonesboro, Ark., for $1.25 million

He probably could have used being from Lufkin as an excuse for driving into the marsh.

Top Gear is far and away the best Auto show on television or the internets. My all time favorite segment is when they test drive the new (euro) Ford Fiesta and put it through all sorts of crazy - for instance running away from bad guys driving a Vette... inside a shopping mall. At the end they wind up storming the beaches in the Fiesta with the Royal Marines.

Clarkson: "Look at that! Your smoke grenades fit perfectly in the cup holders!"

Perhaps "payments" is what this is actaully all about. Like this A-hole might be broke and spiraling down and cannnot afford to make the payments. Why not "accidentally" drive it into the marsh so the insurance company will total it and pay it off?

Salt water marsh....the car is totaled.

Then perhaps I stayed in insurance way too long.

It is actually a french car.

Strangely enough the dude that wrecked it, owns an exotic car salvage / resale company.

Also strange, here is a video of the actual car being wrecked into the lagoon. How in bizzare is it that someone got it on film? coincidence?

I heard a story that an EB Veyron melted (at least partially) a Hyundai that was sitting next to it at a stop light. The car has 4, count 'em 4, radiators.

By owning a auto salvage company and resale company, he knows all the angles on insurance claims.

The video of him actaully going into he water shows NO bird anywhere near his car.

A coincidence that someone was filming as he drove the car into the water? Doubtful.
