NBA sets regular-season mark with over 21 million fans

NEW YORK -- NBA regular-season attendance averaged 17,314 this year, the highest in league history.

Total attendance of nearly 21.3 million topped the previous mark of more than 20.5 million set during the 1995-96 season, the league said Thursday. Excluding the addition of the expansion Charlotte Bobcats, NBA games still drew more than 432,500 fans this season than last season.

This year's average attendance mark exceeded the 1995-96 record of 17,252 and last season's average of 17,050.

Detroit had the highest attendance (22,076), followed by Chicago (20,204) and Dallas (20,061). Charlotte (14,431) was next to last among the 30 teams, and New Orleans (14,221) had the lowest mark.

You want to know what's funny about this....

Chicago has had sellouts throughout the past years (even when they were at the bottom of the totem poll) -- they have always had a huge fan base way after the departure of MJ -- I saw a behind the scenes on NBA TV a few years back and they have all sorts of fun games and family activities -- that it really doesn't matter whether they win or lose --

Now Detroit I understand cuz they're the Def champs and Dallas -- well they've always been fun to watch -- but it really amazes that Chicago still has such high fan base -- I am impressed.

What's somewhat interesting to me is that they did it in a year where LA and NY both sucked.

toronto is the 7th best draw in the league and we all know how bad they are. some towns are more "basketball" towns than others. If atlanta could put together a decent team, i could def. see them getting their attendence up there as that its a pretty big b-ball town if the right product is out there

Atlanta just sucks as a sports town, period. The Braves draw only at the end of the season, when they win their annual division banner before flaming out in the postseason. The Hawks and the Falcons don't draw, period, despite the Falcons having Vick. Just a sucky, awful, terrible sports town. I don't understand what their problem is.

Atlanta and Miami are the 2 worst sports towns in the US. Probably because Miami has south beach and Atlanta has more strip clubs per capita than any city in the land.

Didn't the Spurs rank right up at the top for attendance when we played in the Alamodome? We can't cram as many into the SBC Center, so we must be down by at least 10,000 per game. Am I right?

i dont think we ever averaged 28,000 people even at the alamo dome, and considering the SBC center seats 18 thousand people, i should think we avearge around 17 something. (no more cheap seats)
