Notre Dame fires Weis after 5 seasons

By TOM COYNE AP Sports Writer
SOUTH BEND, Ind.(AP)—Notre Dame has fired coach Charlie Weis after a string of disappointing seasons that was capped by an agonizing four-game losing streak.

Athletic director Jack Swarbrick announced the decision Monday, saying in a news release “We have great expectations for our football program, and we have not been able to meet those expectations.”
Swarbick says he recommended to the university president Sunday night that Weis be let go with six years left on his contract.
Assistant head coach Rob Ianello will step in for Weis until a new head coach is hired.
Following a 6-2 start, the losing streak began and as it progressed Weis’ future was in doubt.
Weis finishes 35-27 in five seasons, worse than his two predecessors, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie.

Wow..............I bet he has a few nice pay checks still left coming to him. 6 yrs left on his current contract? Who and the made that silly deal? At least wait till the guy wins 10 or 11 games in a season before the big contract.

Yeah, evidently Weis can't recruit defensive players.

Like someone mentioned before..............Notre Dame has the huge tradition, but getting great players to attend a private university in a very cold climate is more difficult now a days. Especially when you have good football programs in the warm belt.

+1. The trend in Norman is downwards and Stoops needs to get out while the gettin's good.

    doubtful.

It's a bad fit for both parties and I doubt ND wants to pony up the $10 mill per season it would probably take to get him there.

Doesn't ND have the highest revenue of any other football program? I think it happens.

Or 5-7...If Michigan State holds them on the last drive, they lose in East Lansing.

If I was getting paid a lot of money to call people The Sheriff or The Surgeon on MNF, that's a gig I wouldn't be giving up.

eh, I've seen stranger things, but I just don't see Stoops leaving OU for ND unless they give him a blank check for the next 5+ years like they did for Weiss.

    even then....

imagine if they went and looked for a cheap up-and-coming coach and pumped 8 million of that into facilities and recruiting every year, much greater return on investment IMO

Which is why I think it will be Kelly. He will not cost as much as a Gruden, Meyer or Stoops.
