WASHINGTON (AP) - A House subcommittee approved legislation Wednesday aimed at forcing college football to switch to a playoff system to determine its national champion, over the objections of some lawmakers who said Congress has meatier targets to tackle.
The bill, which faces steep odds, would ban the promotion of a postseason NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision game as a national championship unless it results from a playoff. The measure passed by voice vote in a House Energy and Commerce Committee subcommittee, with one audible "no," from Rep. John Barrow, D-Ga.
"With all due respect, I really think we have more important things to spend our time on," Barrow said before the vote, although he stressed he didn't like the current Bowl Championship Series, either.
The BCS selections announced last weekend pit two unbeaten teams, No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Texas, in the Jan. 7 national le game. Three other undefeated teams - TCU, Cincinnati and Boise State - will play in a BCS bowl game, but not for the championship.
"What can we say - it's December and the BCS is in chaos again," said the bill's sponsor, Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, the top Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. He said the BCS system is unfair and won't change unless prompted by Congress.
The legislation, which goes to the full committee, would make it illegal to promote a national championship game "or make a similar representation," unless it results from a playoff.
There is no Senate version, although Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, has pressed for a Justice Department an rust investigation into the BCS.
Shortly after his election last year, Barack Obama said there should be a playoff system.
In a statement before the vote, BCS executive director Bill Han said, "With all the serious matters facing our country, surely Congress has more important issues than spending taxpayer money to dictate how college football is played."
The subcommittee chairman, Rep. Bobby Rush, an Illinois Democrat who co-sponsored the bill, said, "We can walk and chew gum at the same time."
Yet Barrow wasn't alone in criticizing his colleagues' priorities; Reps. Zach Space, D-Ohio, and Bart Stupak, D-Mich., made similar arguments. Space said that with people facing tough times, the decision to focus on college football sends the "wrong message."
The bill has a tough road ahead, given the wide geographic representation and political clout of schools in the six conferences - the ACC, Big East, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-10 and SEC - that get automatic BCS bowl bids
The current college bowl system features a championship game between the two top teams in the BCS standings, based on two polls and six computer rankings. Eight other schools play in the Orange, Sugar, Fiesta and Rose bowls.
Under the BCS, the champions of those six big conference get automatic bids, while other conferences don't. Those six conferences also receive far more money than the other conferences.
The death of the BCS is nigh!!

That should have happened this year. TCU deserves a shot at the le.
TCU at least deserved a shot at Florida.
This isn't going anywhere. They are just playing a magicians trick to distract the public with BCS controversy while they us over on health care and cap and trade.

Anyone else in disgusted at the fact that they are wasting time and tax dollars with this ?
God i hate politicians.
They disgust me even more when they with REAL issues. I wish they would spend ALL their time on trivial like this.
No one is going to get ed over.
Quit crying.
Disgusting was the 8 years spent with W.
That was some disgusting with, you know, ignoring The Cons ution and starting a bull war in Iraq that cost us trillions of dollars.
But, yea, the BCS needs to go.
This reminds me of the congressional hearings on steroid use in baseball while the economy was going down the tubes & congress was cutting deals left & right with the banking industry…Lets not discuss corrupt politicians… We need the Gub-Ment involved in sports at the college level now…
Oh yeah, Peewee, I get it. Democrats are all sweetness and light and Republicans are the devil. *liberal knee jerk*
Personally I'm disgusted with almost all of them.
If they all would just vote yes without a debate then this would all be over with.
Hey, you.
A computer shouldn't decide who gets to play for the championship.
Goddamn right.
Our worthless government does so many stupid, nonsensical things that this is a breath of fresh air. the BCS and it's corporate lapdogs.
6 team playoff - top two seeds are byes (as determined by the polls, yes, including the stupid computer poll)
Round 1 - 2 games at 2 of the BCS bowl locations (e.g. sugar, fiesta )
Round 2 - 2 games at the other 2 BCS bowl locations (rose, orange)
Natty championship - at one of the BCS bowls on a rotational basis
ALL the rest of the bowl games are kept as normal. Playoff would start the week after conference le weekend, with ultimate natty championship taking place on New Years day. No more of this mid January bull
All corporate interests can stay on because you're using the same Bowls and can continue to call them as such. Viola! Problem solved
You wanna know why college football lets a in' computer pick who plays in the championship game and BCS games? Money and TV ratings. Plain and simple.
You mean like mandating someone HAS to have healthcare?
Just curious.
You tink dets bed? Rememba tha time EricB's savior Geroge Walker Bush spent 20 minutes during a State of the Union Address to talk about steroids and performance enchancing drugs in the MLB?
Rememba?
i think we all have such short memories we cant remember what happened before the bcs, the only thing it does is put the #1 team and #2 in the same bowl, thats all it does and all it ever claimed to do. bcs vs these mythical "playoffs" have actually exceeded the interest people have in any particular team or the sport of college football itself.(look at this thread, ashbeeighs talking about it)
college football is COLLEGE football, you cannot have a playoff, you just cant. it is cliche but the entire season is a playoff, if you change it, the sport changes into something totally different. the bowl system is a historic part of american history and its not going to change anytime soon. every year teams get screwed, EVERY year, look it up, EVERY ing year.
im not even going to bring up the ESPN angle of this subject, we all know what a complete joke that network has always been
ive said that^ or a 4 team playoff would be the only halfway agreeable compromise. its still not happening any time soon.6 team playoff - top two seeds are byes (as determined by the polls, yes, including the stupid computer poll)
Round 1 - 2 games at 2 of the BCS bowl locations (e.g. sugar, fiesta )
Round 2 - 2 games at the other 2 BCS bowl locations (rose, orange)
say there is a 6 team playoff, some teams play 13 games, some play 12, some play a conference championship game, some dont. you would still have teams (after # 7) ing about how they get screwed, who played who, which conference is the best... but now youve got even more ing and discussion. and it wont stop there, people will be rabblerousing for a 12 team playoff, 24. the basketball tourney used to have 8 teams, now theres 65
It's ridiculous for congress to be involved with this. Absolutely ridiculous.
The schools, the networks and sponsors have a lot of money being interchanged...and that's why this system isn't going anywhere.
Like Mookie said previously, adding a playoff system changes the entire dynamic of the "regular season." It is what it is....and that's why people are so interested in the system to begin with.
The fact of the matter is a 6 team playoff would include every undefeated bowl subdivision team, every year. There wouldn't be 2 leftover unbeaten teams, as there will be this year.
There will always be ing and moaning when a sport has over 100 active teams. The goal here is to finish it on the field, and to make sure there are no unbeaten teams left over. No more Utahs. No more Auburns. No more teams left wondering with a donut on the right side. No more split national les.
The BCS rankings right now include all five teams left undefeated, plus Florida. Bama and Texas sit, while Cincy/Boise St and Fla/TCU battle it out. That would be sick. And the month of December would be relevant for college football, instead of being the graveyard it is now. Neatly tuck in the traditional bowls and then cap that with the big one on New Years night! They would make far more money off this system, because let's be frank, it's all about the $$$$$$ Not kids making classes, or study time, or any other bull reason people trot out for this argument. It's about the benjis.
Oh well, guess I'll just keep crying about it until it happens. At least give us the +1. Would be sweet to see a UT/TCU tilt for the championship (assuming they both win)
I call bull on this. Tradition and rivalries carry CFB more than any other American sport. Conference crowns still mean a uva lot to schools as do those major rivalry games each year. If this argument were true, then nobody would watch the regular season of the NFL, NBA, MLB, or the NHL. The meaningless regular season argument is old and tired. Attendance would not decline, although TV viewership might just a bit because you would loose a few casual fans (not such a bad thing, IMO) However, that would all be made up during the hype of the playoff run and eventual le game.
...and a deregulated Wall Street. Obama is the banking ins utions wet dream come true.
