I don't think Bethesda can do much good besides an oblivion style game. I doubt they'd make a decent mmo with that type of play considering they couldn't even integrate multiplayer elements into either fo3/obliv.

We've been following the complex legal battle between Interplay and Bethesda over Fallout rights, and an update comes today with news of a win for Interplay (via Duck and Cover).
As a part of Bethesda's initial lawsuit, the company sought to halt the sales of older versions of Fallout by Interplay. A Maryland court has ruled in Interplay's favor today, allowing it to both continue selling the older les and work on its MMO Project: V13.
This is just one rung of the case, but if Bethesda wins overall, the entire Fallout IP will be rewarded to the company. We'll keep you posted on the details as they emerge.

I dont like this, interplay was good back in the day, but I dont think they can pull off a successful MMO in the Fallout series like Bethesda would be able to.

I think they are ready for the transition. They have pretty much perfected story telling in an open world. Whats to stop them from adding multiplayer at this point?
The fact that Fallout or Oblivion could even be thought of as a possible multiplayer game gives credence to the possibility that they could make one. Just because they havnt yet, doesnt mean they cant.
Look what happened with the Ultima series. It was all single player, then when UO came out, it pretty much ed itself all over the internets face back in 1997. The biggest MMO Before UO? The Realm. It had an approximate MAX userbase of around 25,000 users. To this Day, while nowhere in comparison to games like Warcraft or even Everquest, UO still hovers around 135,000 users. Again, thats since 1997. An MMO based on a single player game from the 80's.
bioware has been making single player games forever and they are now supposedly working on an MMO. Are you going to doubt them too?
Interplay, on the other hand, hasnt come out with a le on their own since Descent I think. They are on the virge of Bankruptcy. Do you really want them spearheading a Fallout MMO?
I've been following Bethesda since they released Arena. If they dont/cant make a Fallout MMO, they will make an Elderscrolls MMO and I, for one, will play it.
An MMO is coming from Bethesda though, I dont doubt it. back in 2007 Bethesda registered www.elderscrollsonline.com . Nothing is on it at all at this point, but they have supposedly invested $300 million in an online division.

As much as I like Elder Scrolls more than Fallout, a Fallout MMo would be a lot fresher. There are already too many MMO's based on spell casting and things of that nature.
Anarchy Online
Neocron 2
Fallen Earth
Huxley
Stargate Worlds
Jumpgate Evolution
Star Trek Online
The list goes on... There are plenty out there.
Check out the game list on www.mmorpg.com
meh. I've never liked any MMORPG I've played...I'd rather just stick with single player games anyway. i'm really holding out hope for star wars the old republic...but i am not gonna hold my breath.
I wish there was a completed co-op mod for morrowind/oblivion/fo3 though. it'd seem to be a lot more fun to play with another friend.
I'm keeping my eye on SWTOR also just because Bioware is making it, I don't think they will disappoint.
Before you start an MMO, try joining a "guild" and get to know them before the game goes live.
I have had the same problem since I left UO. I try to start as an individual and they (the games) all end up sucking. UO was the best but I think thats because I hooked up with a group of people before the game even started. By 2000 we where one of the best PvP guilds on Atlantic server and we only had about 20 members. We just KNEW how to react to what eachother was doing. We would constantly take out 2-3x our numbers. I have yet to experience that in another game. At one point I was part of a small group of about 8 people that defected from LLTS and took it to LLTS every day (LLTS is probably still the largest guild in UO, if not any other MMO). I was probably the first effective melee PvP character on UO that owned people (at least on Atlantic server) including Dragons himself.
Ahh, those where the days.... Before UO was pussified.
The only other games I played for an extended period of time where Asherons Call and Shadowbane, and thats because I knew people from UO, many of whom I had killed in UO![]()

hehe someone here knows about UO
was pretty amazing to play that game when it first came out. full pvp, full loot, real economy, non-instanced housing, etc. nothing has even come close.
instead of fighting
why don't they just merge together into a bigger company and work together
I guess because they don't want to, evidently. It may amount to something as simple as the idea that the bigger a company is, the smaller its profit margin.
Well from the gameplay I've seen of the old republic leaves me doubting somewhat. It's early though, but the only thing that has me hyped is the multiplayer storytelling aspect.
As for bethesda, yeah I'd love to see them make an mmo with the quality of oblivion/fo3, but I know they'd likely change the way the games play and look drastically. I thought it would have been a given for them to have MP for Fallout 3, but they didn't. I don't even think they care about branching into mmos, just making single player versions of their franchise games.
Unless they make epic games that many people buy, which should increase their profit
Interplay was near bankruptcy not long ago, and I don't think their status has changed much since then... The only thing keeping them alive is this Fallout MMO 'project'.
But if you can make such games without taking on the partner, why bother, y'know? Bethesda has had nothing but success doing what they do, the way they do it.
Bethesda is already working on something along these lines.

Description:
Brink is an immersive shooter that blends single-player, co-op, and multiplayer gameplay into one seamless experience, allowing you to develop your character across all modes of play. You decide the role you want to assume in the world of Brink as you fight to save yourself and mankind’s last refuge for humanity. Brink offers a compelling mix of dynamic battlefields, extensive customization options, and an innovative control system that will keep you coming back for more.
Story:
A man-made floating city called the Ark, made up of hundreds of separate floating islands, is on the brink of all-out civil war. Originally built as an experimental self-sufficient and 100% “green” habitat, the reported rapid rise of the Earth’s oceans has forced the Ark to become a refuge for humanity. Crammed with the original Ark founders, their descendants, as well as tens of thousands of refugees, the Ark exists in total isolation from the rest of the world. With 25 years of social unrest, the inhabitants of the Ark have reached their breaking point. It’s up to you to decide the future of the Ark and the human race.
Key Features:
Blurring the Lines Between Offline and Online - Advance your character’s development across every gameplay mode: single player, co-op, and multiplayer. Gain experience points that you can spend on customizing and upgrading your skills and abilities, designing an entirely unique look and feel for your character.
Groundbreaking Kinesthetics - Brink uses the familiar shooter controls that you’re used to, without frustrating, artificial constraints and takes advantage of a new feature: the SMART button. When you press the SMART button, the game dynamically evaluates where you’re trying to get to, and makes it happen. No need to perfectly time a jump or vault, the game knows what you want to do.
Context-Sensitive Goals and Rewards - Objectives, communications, mission generation, and inventory selection are all dynamically generated based on your role, your status, your location, your squad-mates, and the status of the battle in all gameplay modes. You’ll always know exactly where to go, what to do when you get there, and what your reward will be for success.
Virtual Texturing – Brink’s proprietary technology, Virtual Texturing, breaks new ground on current-gen consoles and PCs with an even greater focus on highly detailed characters, realistic environments, lighting, effects, and atmospherics,. This compe ive lead on the squad-combat genre helps thrust players into the gritty reality of the Ark's epic secluded arcology.
To be fair, they are only publishing it, so I suppose it could be another crapper like Rogue is.
Looks promising to me
Bethesda's publishing stamp means jack after Rogue Warrior. They're still a solid developer, but damn, tarnished their reputation on that one.
these companies gotta realize too MANY MMOS = oversaturation
they are gonna lose money and burn people out on mmo's
Interplay deserves it. It was their IP and they have a clause to make it. Plus I hate huge developers. They always seem to lose sight of making a good game in lieu of milking a franchise for quick cash,
