To Foul or Not to Foul: Down Two, 27 Seconds Left
    by Graydon Gordian

With 27 seconds left in the fourth quarter, Portland inbounded the ball, nursing a lead that had narrowed to two after a layup by Tim Duncan. With just over 3 seconds separating the game clock and the shot clock, the Spurs chose to apply on-the-ball pressure and hopefully force the turnover or, at the very least, a low percentage shot. Although the turnover never came, the Spurs did force Jerryd Bayless into a long jumper. The Spurs were in excellent position to secure the rebound but George Hill had trouble corralling it, and the loose ball bounced the direction of Andre Miller. Miller was quickly fouled and made both free throws, putting the game out of reach.

I thought it was Manu who had trouble securing the rebound

I know I said this another thread, but you definitely foul. This defense can't stop teams like they could in the past. Besides. Portland was going to drain the shot clock to one before they shot. Best case scenario is Spurs ball with about 1.5 seconds left on the game clock. The spurs wouldn't have got off a high percentage shot.

It doesn't really matter..there's no way this game should have been this close in the first place, so the loss would be deserved either way..

They didn't drain the clock though and the spurs could have had enough time if they would have gotten the rebound.

This might be the least important decision/problem for the Spurs from last night's game. We wont need to make that decision against the Lakers/Nuggets when were down 20 with 27 seconds left in the 4th. Why dont we analyse still not having anything that resembles a big man next to Duncan - or Tony simply not being able to run a simple fast break or get scorers the ball where they want it. He's utterly incompetent as a passing PG. Or we could talk about Manu having almost no explosiveness left....

Something that is actually going to turn this season around..

I thought you could just throw the ball up in the air at the buzzer. It will take more than 3 seconds to fall on the ground.
